National Buffalo Wing Fest in SI's TOP 10!

National Buffalo Wing Festival is a weekend festival held at Coca-Cola Field in downtown Buffalo, New York celebrating the Buffalo style chicken wing. The festival is held on Labor Day weekend (The 8th Annual will be on September 5-6, 2009) and culminates with the IFOCE sanctioned Buffalo Wing eating contest. It has also made this year's Sports Illustrated's TOP 10 "Budget-friendly Summer Sporting Events ruled by Oddity" list!

The first festival was held in 2002. Founder Drew Cerza, called the "Wing King" by The Buffalo News, was said to have modeled the event on a fictitious festival from the movie Osmosis Jones. Though it has been claimed that this is the first festival of its kind, "WingStock on Main Street", was held annually in downtown Buffalo prior to the first National Buffalo Wing Festival. The birthplace of the Buffalo Chicken Wing is the infamous Anchor Bar.

It is estimated that well over a quarter of a million people have attended the event since its inception. Last year's festival was held on August 30-31, 2008, and a little 100-pound female from Long Island won the wing-eating contest! ALOT more info can be found at BuffaloWing.com!

Wow, there really is a festival for everything! Sounds yummy. If I were anywhere near Buffalo, I'd go. I love a good festival, (almost) no matter what it's about. Hmm, I haven't had wings in a while. Your lens gave me a craving.
