The rings Buffy and Angel wore as a symbol of their love for each other

In the second season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel gives Buffy a ring, as a symbol of his love. That ring was a Claddagh ring - an old Irish wedding ring that is very popularly worn today between couples. Angel already had one of his own, a remnant of his Irish heritage.

The Irish fishing village of Claddagh, just outside Galway, is believed to be the original source of both the design and associated customs. The Claddagh ring dates back to the 17th century, although elements of its design are much older, and based on a group of European finger rings called "Fede Rings".

"My people -- before I was changed -- they exchanged this as a sign of devotion. It's a claddagh ring. The hands represent friendship, the crown represents loyalty... and the heart... Well, you know... Wear it with the heart pointing towards you. It means you belong to somebody. Like this. Put it on."

It also turns up again later, because Buffy wears it - and another claddagh ring shows up when a would-be boyfriend, friend, Scott, tries to give her one, when she's getting over Angel.

ANGEL: I should go the rest of the way alone.
BUFFY: Okay.
ANGEL: But I'll be back. I will.
BUFFY: When? Six months, a year? You don't know how long it's gonna take or if we'll even...
ANGEL: Hey... If we'll even what?
BUFFY: Well, if you haven't noticed, someone pretty much always wants us dead.
ANGEL: Don't say that. We'll be fine.
BUFFY: We don't know that.
ANGEL: We can't know, Buffy. Nobody can. That's just the deal. I have something for you. For your birthday. I... I was gonna give it to you earlier, but...
BUFFY: It's beautiful.
ANGEL: My people -- before I was changed -- they exchanged this as a sign of devotion. It's a claddagh ring. The hands represent friendship, the crown represents loyalty... and the heart... BUFFY: (sobs) I don't wanna do this.
ANGEL: Me either.
BUFFY: So don't go.

Other Appearances of Claddagh Rings in Buffy

The ring became a significant symbol for Buffy

Scott gave her a claddagh ring that’s identical to the one that Angel gave her, Buffy freaks out a little.

Angel gave Buffy the ring in episode 13 "Surprise". Obviously Buffy continued to wear the ring, meaning it appeared whenever she did. However, it also turned up a few other times...

Most notably in the beginning of Season three, in Episode 37 "Faith, Hope and Trick "

  • Buffy dreams that she is dancing with Angel and that the Claddagh ring slides off and falls to the floor. Angel picks it up, starts bleeding from the hand, then from where she stabbed him in the chest.
  • Scott, a boy from school who's trying to date Buffy, gave her a claddagh ring that's identical to the one that Angel gave her, as a symbol of his "friendship", just before Angel returns from hell. Buffy is shocked, and drops the ring, and leave, then decides it's time to move on.
  • Buffy places her ring on the floor in the mansion, on the spot where she killed Angel. When he returns, she finds it in the middle of the blackened area.

  • Angel's Ring
After Angel returns from Hell, he's not wearing anything, and the ring isn't seen again. However, he's wearing one in the first episode of the spin-off Angel, as is the (irish) oracle Doyle.

I'd offer to give it to my husband of course! He's my best friend and bought me all seven Buffy season's on DVD so what's not to love?

I haven't watched a lot of the Buffy Vampire episodes, but was just given a claddagh ring as a token from my mom's trip to Ireland. This is a great page though on why the ring was significant to Buffy. Might have to look episode 37 up on Netflix. :) Thanks! ~blessed by your wedding & engagement ring neighborhood angel~

Lovely lens! I love Claddagh rings and I love Buffy and Angel. I've always wanted a Claddagh - hopefully I'll have one some day. :-)

Very nice lens. Well, believe it or not, this is the first time I've heard of Claddagh Rings. They look great.

I've already given it. I proposed with a Claddagh ring. I hid it in a Christmas bauble. And yes, I, and my fiance, were introduced to them through BtVS.
