The rings Buffy and Angel wore as a symbol of their love for each other
The Irish fishing village of Claddagh, just outside Galway, is believed to be the original source of both the design and associated customs. The Claddagh ring dates back to the 17th century, although elements of its design are much older, and based on a group of European finger rings called "Fede Rings".

Do You Own A Claddagh Ring?
"With these hands I take your heart and crown it with my love"
"My people -- before I was changed -- they exchanged this as a sign of devotion. It's a claddagh ring. The hands represent friendship, the crown represents loyalty... and the heart... Well, you know... Wear it with the heart pointing towards you. It means you belong to somebody. Like this. Put it on."
What Does The Real Ring Look Like?
A screenshot from when Angel hands it over
It also turns up again later, because Buffy wears it - and another claddagh ring shows up when a would-be boyfriend, friend, Scott, tries to give her one, when she's getting over Angel.

Other Appearances of Claddagh Rings in Buffy
The ring became a significant symbol for Buffy

Angel gave Buffy the ring in episode 13 "Surprise". Obviously Buffy continued to wear the ring, meaning it appeared whenever she did. However, it also turned up a few other times...
Most notably in the beginning of Season three, in Episode 37 "Faith, Hope and Trick "
Angel's Ring
After Angel returns from Hell, he's not wearing anything, and the ring isn't seen again. However, he's wearing one in the first episode of the spin-off Angel, as is the (irish) oracle Doyle.

- I haven't watched a lot of the Buffy Vampire episodes, but was just given a claddagh ring as a token from my mom's trip to Ireland. This is a great page though on why the ring was significant to Buffy. Might have to look episode 37 up on Netflix. :) Thanks! ~blessed by your wedding & engagement ring neighborhood angel~

- I've already given it. I proposed with a Claddagh ring. I hid it in a Christmas bauble. And yes, I, and my fiance, were introduced to them through BtVS.
