What to Pack in a Bug Out Bag | Packing an Emergency Go Bag | Bug Out Gear
Ranked #68 in Travel & Places, #3,715 overall
What is a Bug Out Bag?
Whether you call it a go-kit, grab-and-go bag, 72-hour kit or a molle bag, a bug out bag carries supplies for at least three days, plus clothing and tools to help you if you have to leave your home or workplace in a hurry in case of a major emergency. Why 72 Hours? 72 hours is considered to be the time it usually takes to set up emergency or disaster recovery operations. That's the time when you are likely to be on your own, with no food, water or resources - that's when you need a bug out bag!
What Goes in a Bugout Bag?
Aside from food and water, a typical "BoB" should carry clothing changes, toiletries, cash and credit cards, vital documents (identification, medical details, family photographs), shelter (at minimum a large poncho, which could be tied down but, if space allows, a tent) and useful tools such as flashlight, matches and other fire-starting tools, a first aid kit and a small knife.
Your bugout bag should be packed and ready to go at a moment's notice; food and water should be checked regularly and replaced when necessary.

What Should You Put in Your Bug Out Bag?
How much you put in a Bug Out Bag will depend on the type of emergency you may encounter - whether it is fire, flood, hurricane, tornado or earthquake - and how long you might be away from home. Also, if you have access to a vehicle at that time.
Here are some items which might prove necessary:
Medical kit
Sleeping bag
Fire starting kit
Stove and gas
Hunting knife
Compass
Hammer, screwdrivers, small saw.
Batteries
Flashlights
Portable radio (wind up if available)
Whistle
Notepaper and pens
Local Emergency phone numbers
Plastic bags, ziplock bags
Plastic or latex gloves
Thermal blanket
String and strong twine or wire
Playing cards, small reading books
Local guide books and maps
Crow bar and masks
Cloths or rags
Comfortable shoes, two pairs of socks
Comfortable clothing (sweats, extra underwear)
Jacket or sweatshirt

What Makes a Good Bug Out Bag?
Choosing a Bag as a Bug Out Bag is a matter of personal preference. Any large, well-made bag will do, provided it has compartments and carrying straps. A backpack is ideal, as it can be warn on the back, leaving the hands free. Ensure seams are well able to take the demand made upon them, and straps will not rip. Choose one with outside pockets for small items and things which may be needed quickly such as flashlight and penknife. Store items within plastic bags to prevent leakage and to protect from wet weather or flood.

- I have had to pack a "go bag" in a hurry. A most stressful thing. We kept most of our important paperwork in a safe. So it was easy to grab it and go.
