The Buhund Dog Breed - Read This Before You Buy a Puppy!

Ranked #17,270 in Pets & Animals, #496,305 overall

The Buhund - so many advantages in a dog breed I don't know where to start.

We have long been fans of the Buhund since my mother owned one "Quinta" from her pedigree name. The strange thing to me is that they are not a better known dog breed, but maybe that's is one reason why they are such a dependable breed. The breeders tend to be just such genuine types that they would never breed the dog too commercially. Also, to the uninitiated the buhund might be thought to perhaps be a "spitz" - a similar looking breed from the same group of nations, with many of the same assets.

The Buhund Smaller than a Collie, Intelligent, Active, and they Love Us!

A Compact Dog for Smaller Homes but with Big Dog Personality

Yes! I already said it. The Buhund is friendly and fun loving and gets along with both people and other animals, so you will find the breed listed among the best there are.

This breed generally gets on very well with children but, like any breed, they should not be left alone with un-supervised young children who can easily frighten or hurt a dog without realising it. The image I placed at the introduction shows our daughter when she was less than two, but just to make the point about supervising very young children with animals - she was being supervised - thta's my mother's knee in the foreground.

In many parts of Norway there was at least one of this dog breed on every farm in earlier days. The breed is quite an ancient breed that has always been closely associated with man. Buhunds have herded all sorts of stock such as cattle, pigs, sheep and even reindeer and this means that they must be given lots of exercise on a daily basis.

The instinct to work is still present, so if you live in an area where there is livestock you must be prepared to make doubly sure that your Buhund is not allowed to wander, as anything on four legs could be chased. Remember that a farmer will not hesitate to shoot a dog which is worrying livestock Working dogs need exercise, and the owner really must give it to this breed or both pet and owner will suffer.

Excessive barking could be a problem if these dogs were not trained to be quieter by incentives given. They do like to make a noise! The breed has the desire for human companionship and makes an ideal family pet as they are so very affectionate.

Generally speaking the Buhund is a remarkably healthy breed and most will only visit the Vet's once a year for their annual boosters. Cataracts, a very few epilepsy concerns and just a very few hip displaysia, are all that have been reportedly witnessed recently. This sounds bad, but it really is a short list compared with most breeds and the incidence rate is very low.

The breed is a herding dog as well as a guardian of livestock and home. In addition to herding, the Buhund is also seen working as a 'hearing dog' and police dog. Doing what these dogs do best, is making use of their herding drive which is so integral to this breed's character.

Originally this breed was used in Scandinavian countries as a herding dog for cattle, sheep and horses that doubled as an all-purpose farm dog This breed comes recommended for many reasons, but we would like to highlight the particular fact that a person who is small, and not very strong will find this breed their ally because being smaller these people will be able to restrain and control them.
