From Lowly Buick to Corvette-Beater In 5 Years
The Buick Grand National started life as an option on the Buick Regal in 1982. It was the performance option on that car until 1986, when the Grand National became its own model. This was a car that stood against everything people thought of when they thought of Buick. This was not a car for senior citizens who could not afford a Cadillac. This was for straight-line speed freaks.
The standard Grand National came with an intercooled turbocharger setup, helping the V6 engine make 235 horsepower. The 0-60 time of 5 seconds flat would leave any other stock car from General Motors in the dust.
Grand National collectors and fans know about a limited performance options that was available on Grand Nationals. It was called the Grand National GNX, and only 547 were produced. This car had 275 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque. That's a significant boost from an already high perfoming car. The option cost $11,000, which is the main reason it did not sell particularly well.
The Grand National is a lost remnant from the 1980's. It was an era when poorly-made cars cornered the market, but somehow GM managed to sneak in a great car for the model years 1986 and 1987, and under the Buick name no less.
