Build A Grapevine Trellis
Grapevines are not strong and so if you are planning to grow grapes in your yard or garden, you will need to build a grapevine trellis to support them. Fortunately, learning how to trellis your grape vines is not too complicated. The following options are available to you: build your own trellis or buy one which is ready made. One of the great advantages of trellising grapes is that you need less space and so can grow vines in smaller spaces, which is ideal for growing grapes at home, or if you plan to develop a larger vineyard, you will only need a few small plot of land - several hundred acres will be enough.
Materials for Your Grapevine Trellis
Your can choose to have a grape trellis which is purely functional or you can construct a decorative trellis, which will create an attractive feature in your garden. Various different materials can be used in the construction of your grapevine trellis, according to your needs.
Some of the common materials used to make grapevine trellises are pre-treated wood, aluminium, stainless steel and iron . Grapevine trellises come in different shapes and sizes. Size can be chosen to suit the local climate, shorter trellises being more appropriate for colder regions, because smaller vinescope better with winter conditions., and of course, these make care and preparation for the arrival of winter a lot easier for the growers. Smaller trelisses are normally made of poles which are about 3 feet in height, while larger trelisses are constructed with poles of approximately 8 feet.

Constructing Your Grapevine Trellis
The trellis must be made before the vine is planted and the ground should be prepared in advance. Once you have mapped out the area in which your trellis will be situated, put the first post into the ground, going down to a depth of 2 feet. You should be sure to check the type of posts and the instructions which apply to the soil in your area.
You might want to put cement the posts into the earth, as they will be there for at least several years and for this reason must be stable. Other ways in which you can secure the posts are by using catch wires anchored to the earth or placing a shorter post just beside the main post.
Posts must be around 8 feet apart so that the vine has plenty of roomin which to grow. Next you must put 2 rows of galvanized steel wire inbetween the posts. Make sure these are of quality and don't forget that the wire must be strong enough to bear the weight of the vine when it is fully grown. The first row of wire should be about3 inches above the ground and the second row will be placed at the top of the posts. They can be stapled so that they stay place.
When the vine begins growing, train it to grow along these 2 wires. You can use cloth or string to attach the vine to the wires. It is crucial that tyou do this carefully, as otherwise it is easy to cause damage to the shoots.
Make some effort to get all the details right at this stage, as this will help you have a successful crop of grapes and that will lead to the production of some great wine.
