For less than $150

The average price for a 1000 watt wind generator is in excess of USD$2500. To me that is a lot of money. The worst part is- wind power is a fast way to get living off the grid.

You see, to fully power a 3kWh/day home with solar panels it would cost somewhere in the neighborhood of USD$14,000; however, to power the same home you would need 3 wind generators totaling USD$7500.

Most places are suited for wind power even though you may not feel like it. If you were to go 40 feet up into the air you'd feel wind, and most wind generators can produce power with 5MPH winds!

That still leaves us with the 7500 price tag. Well, if you are a DIY kind of person those 3 wind generators can be had for USD$500 if you build them yourself.

The most expensive part of the wind generator can usually be had for free as well. In todays world most people have switched to satellite tv, but their tv towers are still up. They will usually pay you to take them down! The wind generator I built I got paid $100 to take down this older gentlemans tv tower.

You will need some good easy plans to follow. For this I recommend going to my website Off Grid Living and looking at the plans I have there. They are really simple to follow and all of the calculations are done for you- all you have to do is plug in the numbers.

One of the best things about wind generators is that they can produce AC or DC power, meaning you could hook your wind generator directly up to your house, or have the power it generates stored in your battery bank.

If you think you're up to the challenge I recommend heading over to Off Grid Living where I have tons more information on how to make a wind generator.

First Step to Building A Wind Generator

Gathering the parts

A wind generator has 3 main parts: the blades/tail, the generator, and the tower.

I'm going to go over where to find all of these parts or you can head to my website and get started on building your own wind generator

The blades are made from fiberglass pipe... typically 6" to 10" in diameter. It is specially cut using the plans on my site. The tail is can be made from anything that is flat- I recommend using some plexiglass.

We recommend that you buy your generator motor from ebay as it will save you money (motors there are pretty cheap). The plans on my site show you what to look for.

Lastly, the tower. We have a secret method of getting towers for free. Most people have switched to satellite, but their television towers are still up and the homeowners think they are an eyesore. You should be able to get it for free OR sometimes they will pay you to take it away for them.
