Be Kind to the Earth
Thoughts to consider: You might think about how you could save money building an underground home. You definitely would save a lot of money whether you needed heating or cooling. Building your home in the ground is economical because the earth is always at a temperature lower than 60 degrees, therefore, it would be comfortable if you were warm and comfortable if you were cold. (Ah Groundhog temperature - just kidding!) Only about one-third of your home would be facing direct sunlight. as the rest of it is underground. So if you needed some heat you would feel it mostly in one section of your home. Usually that is the kitchen or living room area if you so choose to design one of those rooms to receive direct sunlight. Of course your home will look different and appears to be part of the earth, however, going green is in today and people are looking for creative and energy efficient ways to save the earth and reduce their carbon footprint and save money.
If in fact you have decided on building an underground home, you also have to think about your surrounding area. Do you want to own lots of land for gardening? Perhaps for livestock or other animals?
Consider looking over architectural plans to see how difficult this endeavor would be. Do you know someone in your area that is capable of creating an underground home for you and your family? Check out their references. Check with your county and state as well to see if this type of construction is allowed in your area.
Please let me know if I have helped you in any way. Also, let me know what questions you still have about underground homes.

- Love this lens on underground homes. Did you see the underground home portrayed in the TV scifi show, "Lathe of Heaven", based on the Ursula K. Leguin book of the same name! One of the best examples of an underground house I've seen on film.
