Lowes Build and Grow Kids Building Projects

Lowes Build and Grow is a great way to spend Saturday morning with your kids. They get to build a fun project that is also free. Since I started taking my son, he's built projects ranging from a picture holder to a Police Car (with flashing blue light) to a Fire Truck (with working siren). The Build and Grow clinics usually run 2 Saturdays a month but for December 2011 there are 3... a caboose, a coal car (tender), and a locomotive... all together they make a very cool Christmas train made by your kid:)

More Fun Than Cartoons

Build and Grow is fun and helps develop important skills...

Concentration...

I don't know about you, but I find most Saturday morning cartoons to be absolute junk. Does anyone in their right mind actually think that something like Dragon Ball Toonzai is appropriate for a 6 year old to watch? (Sonic X and Yugio aren't much better)

I love taking our son to the Lowes Build and Grow clinics because he actually learns something and gets to develop his coordination and skills instead of just watching garbage on TV. Actually it's fun for the whole family - my husband enjoys watching our younger son build things, and our older (and developmentally disabled) son enjoys helping his little brother build the projects.

What Does Your Kid Get?

Build and Grow is much more than "just" free toys...

Free Safety Goggles and Shop Apron: The first time your child goes to a Build and Grow clinic they'll be given a free pair of safety goggles and a shop apron. The goggles are nice because it's a good idea to teach your kids to wear eye protection when hammering - and the Build and Grow kits involve a lot of hammering. The apron isn't really needed for the Build and Grow kits, but it's a nice touch and it will come in handy when they move on to projects involving glue or paint.

The Build and Grow Kit: The Build and Grow kits are actually pretty high quality - or maybe I'm just old fashioned because I like wooded toys better than plastic ones:) Some of the kits are a little cheesy but some are really cool - like a Police Car with a flashing blue light and a Fire Truck with working siren. The homemade binoculars are pretty cool too...

A Really Cool Patch and Certificate of Completion After your kid finishes building their kit, they will be given a matching patch and Certificate of Completion. The patches are especially cool. You can sew them on a jacket, make a patch display board. or just let your kid collect them. My son likes to take them to school and show his friends. I think they're a really neat addition to the Build and Grow kits...

A Build and Grow Clinic in action...

If you watch close, you'll notice that one of the kids was given a replacement kit when his first kit was damaged. What you don't see in the video is that after the kit is complete, the kids get a Certificate of Completion and a Project Patch. The aprons the kids are wearing in the video are provided free (along with a pair of safety glasses) and are the kids' to keep.

Kids Tools

Tools for building the Build and Grow projects...

Sometimes I don't have time to stay for the Build and Grow clinic with my son, and when that happens they've always been nice enough to let us take a kit home. The only problem is we didn't have any kid-sized tools for my son to use. Using dad's hammer didn't work out too well and letting dad build the kit for him kind of defeats the purpose, so we got him a kid-sized tool kit from Grip. The only tool needed for the Build and Grow kits is the hammer, but he absolutely loves the tape measure and he uses the phillips screw driver to change his own batteries in his Paperjam guitar. I figure the rest of the tools will come in handy when he moves on to more advanced projects...

More Kids Woodworking Project Ideas

After learning with Build and Grow, try these more advanced projects...

The Build and Grow kits are a lot of fun, but as your child builds their skills they might want to move on to more advanced projects. The Kid's Building Workshop has 15 projects that are a nice step up from the Build and Grow kits. The projects are as simple as a checker board to as complex as a puppet theater. All of them look like fun project to build with your kid. A couple of the projects require power tools so make sure to give proper adult supervision and guidance when building those...

This looks like something I'd enjoy and I haven't been a 'kid' for many, many, MANY years LOL And why is it that kids can't concentrate unless their tongue is sticking out? LOL Nice lens. More parents should do stuff like this with their kids. blessed
