Build A Resume, Get That Dream Job!

When you start to build a resume, it does not necessarily mean you need follow the tried and tested rules you hear everyday. A good resume does not have to be one page or follow a specific resume layout. Remember, every resume is a specific personally tailored marketing tool. It should match your situation and do exactly what you want it to do.

Instead of a load of rules and tips, I'm going to show you the approach and one of the products I use to build a resume that will blow the competition away!

Build A Resume - Create INTEREST!

Yes, make it interesting

When you build a resume, write with the intention to create interest, to persuade the employer to contact you. Your resume is your marketing tool and is designed to get you an interview. It must be interesting to read and also create a little bit of mystery. If you write with that as your goal, your resume will be far different than if you write to tell or list your job history.

Many people build a resume because everyone knows that you need one to get a job. They write the resume as if they were filling out an income tax form. If you stop and think that a killer resume can be your passport to getting the job you desire, you may be able to harness some real enthusiasm and build a resume that's a real masterpiece, rather than the lackluster efforts most people produce.

And Focus On The Employers Needs

This is an important part if you want to be successful.

Put yourself in the place of the hiring manager. This person is not some anonymous paper pusher deep in the bowels of the personnel department. They have an active involvement in the company you are looking to join. Build a resume to appeal directly to them.

Ask yourself the following questions:

What would make me the perfect candidate?

What does this employer really want from me?

What special abilities would I need to have?

What would I need to be a truly exceptional candidate, not just a merely good one?

If you plan to build a resume for a job in a field you know well, you should already know what would make someone an exceptional candidate. If you're not 100% sure, then gather hints from the job ad you are replying to. Or asking other people who work for the same company or the same field. You could even grasp the mettle and call the employer directly and ask them what they want. What ever you do, don't make wild guesses. When you build a resume it is vital to do this step well. If you are not addressing the companies real needs, they will not respond to your resume.

Placing yourself in the shoes of the hiring manager is the first, and most important, step in starting to build a resume that markets you rather than describes your history. Make sure every step you use towards a finished document is part of your overall intention to convey to the prospective employer that you are a truly exceptional candidate.
