Using Liners When Building A Fish Pond
Pond Liners
Pond liners are quite sturdy and can withstand the hottest summer or harshest winter. The more expensive ones are also UV resistant. A majority of large pond liners are made out of polyethylene and are also supported by a warranty of twenty years on average, during which period you can expect your pond to be leak proof. When choosing a pond liner, you must ensure that you have selected one according to the size of your pond. It can be extremely frustrating to discover that the liner you bought is too small and does not adequately fit the hole that you dug. So measure your pond to make sure that you have enough pond liner to cover the entire length, sides and depth as well as extending a little over the top.
To get the right sized pond liner, measure the width, length and depth of the pond. If you have designed a pond that is irregular in shape take this into account as well. Large sized ponds might require two or more pieces of liners to be joined together but as much as possible, try to use a single sheet as this will make it much easier to install and prevents the chances of leaking and having to make time consuming repairs in the future.
Placing an underlayment beneath the pond liner is also a good idea as it will protect your liner from getting damaged or punctured. If you decide to go in for a pond liner kit, it will have an underlayment as part of the kit.
Maintaining your pond liner is an important task. Whether they are pre-formed pond liners or liners that you install yourself to the shape of your pond, it can get punctured or sag with all the debris, rocks and other add-ons. A patch from a seal kit can easily fix a minor leak but if the liner is badly punctured, it would always be best to replace the entire liner.
Some Tips To Bear In Mind When Deciding On A Pond Liner To Purchase.
1) PVC pond liners can get stiff in very cold climates. This makes them prone to puncturing and leaking. PVC is also not UV resistant.2) EPDM pond liners are a better option compared to PVC but are also more expensive. However, if you reside in a cold climate, EPDM has its advantages in that it is thicker, UV resistant and sturdier.
3) In terms of weight, PVC is lighter than EPDM. It is therefore easier to fold into shape.
4) If you have fish in your pond, then you need to get the right fish pond liner. Double check to ensure that the pond liner you plan to purchase is suitable for aquatic life and is not made from potentially toxic material.
5) If you plan to re-design your pond each year or so, go ahead and purchase a cheaper pond liner. The more expensive ones last a lot longer and you should only consider them if you have decided that this pond project will be a permanent feature in your garden or backyard.

- With winter at hand, don't forget to prepare your outdoor fish pond fort he cold weather. It is always best to take the aquatic life indoors but if the region where you live does not freeze your pond completely, your fish may still survive in the cold water as long as you ensure that is a breathing hole in the ice.
