Learning How to Build A Pergola Attached to The House

Building A Pergola Attached to the House...

People are enjoying their outdoor living spaces today for a variety of reasons today. Sharp increases in the demand of complete outdoor kitchens and genuine patio equipment is evidence of this. Because they desire more from their back yard area, they are willing to take unusual lengths to increase the space. It seems the days of the plain BBQ grill and the cheap lawn chairs are over.

Instead, people are expanding their deck and building a pergola attached to the house just to accommodate these new features. Some of them are doing the improvement themselves to save money. For instance, adding an attached pergola is a great weekend project.

Building Your Pergola

Building a pergola is not difficult but it will require some hard work. The first step is to set the posts that will hold the outside edge of the structure. Do this by digging a series of 24-inch deep holes that are 12 inches round every six feet along the outside edge of the patio making sure each corner has a hole. Adjust the six feet accordingly so the posts are spaced evenly. Next, insert 12-inch diameter form-tube in each hole and then fill with concrete. This process creates a footer to support the weight of the pergola. Once the concrete is dry set the 6x6 posts in an upright position using 2x4 braces to hold them plumb and level. Use a galvanized bracket to attach the post to the concrete at the bottom.

Did You Know......

The origin of the word pergola is from the Latin pergula, which refers to an overhanging eave or projection.

Attaching Pergola to the House

The next step is to attach a beam across the posts. Starting at the fascia board on the house run a level string-line from the top edge of the fascia to each corner post and then from one corner post to the other. Using brackets and lag bolts attach the beam to the posts following the string line. Once the beam is installed, remove the fascia on the house and attach a 2x8 to the ends of the rafters. Now you have everything in place to support the Pergola's roof section. Many different styles can be cut and used as a pergola roof.

However, the traditional style is a scallop pattern on the end of the joists. To do this, trace the scallop onto some sturdy cardboard and transfer the pattern on to the ends of the joists. Use a jigsaw to cut out the pattern on one side on the joist. On the other side of the joist cut the same angle as the roof pitch on the house. Using brackets install the joists an equal distance apart but no more then 24 inches for the best look.

I love pergolas. My son and I built one that we used for my daughter's outdoor wedding. It's not attached to the house, but it looks great in my yard.
