There are basically two ways to generate your home made energy. Solar power and wind power.

Building a windmill is possibly the best first step to being independent of the power companies.

The problem until now has been the cost. Wind turbines have been very expensive and Solar energy panels?

Well I don't think many people gave wind power much thought. Not until now that is.

Since Michael Harvey (a Renewable Energy enthusiast) released his guide earth-4energy last year, there has been a stampede of people releasing similar (very similar in some cases) guides onto the market.

The basic idea is building a windmill or more than one if you have the space to build a windmill.

In addition the guides show you how to build solar panels very cheaply from easily obtained parts from your local home improvement store.

The whole set-up can be less than $200. Which when you consider the savings is a sound investment.

Not to mention how kind solar power and wind power is to the environment.

I have long been an advocate of renewable energy and the idea of creating your own power source is very appealing.

Now you may think that building a windmill or solar power unit is beyond your DIY capabilities but as you can read elsewhere on this blog, I first stumbled upon this home made power system completely by accident and the guy that showed it to me had no DIY skills at all. He created not only enough electricity to power all his home appliances and lighting but now sells power back to the grid!

Solar energy is a green energy source because it is a renewable and it does not cause any harm to the environment. This is achieved by converting the sun's rays into electricity with the help of solar cells.

There are three basic approaches how we can use this form of green energy source namely passive, active and by using photovoltaic cells.

When we refer to passive solar energy, nothing is converted. What happens is the building's design helps avoid heat loss and gets the most out of day lighting.

The third approach is the big scale version and it can power an office or an entire home. This is done with the help of solar cells that convert sunlight into electricity. The smallest ones around can be seen in calculators and watches with large ones planted over huge acres of land.

The only limitation to this green energy source is the fact that it can only generate power when the weather is good and the sun is out. Should it rain, then nothing is collected and converted. When this happens, the auxiliary system is turned on until the weather improves.

Despite that, scientists and students themselves have made solar powered cars. NASA or the National Aeronautical Space Administration has sent satellites into space that are powered by solar panels. A fully functional airport can function on its own thanks to solar power even if it is situated in the middle of the frozen desert.

So people can see the awesome power of solar energy, did you know a kilowatt of solar energy can produce 5.5 hours of electricity per day. If you have more solar cells in place, naturally you will be able to produce enough power to last several days.

Solar energy is just one form of green energy source around. Through the years, we have learned to tap other resources and these examples include wind power, geothermal energy, hydroelectricity and biogas. These are all safe and by using these more often, we don't need to depend on oil which is a nonrenewable resource.

To make this happen, we have to persuade our law makers to promote the use of such resources. Although you hear speeches left and right about their concern for the environment, it is all talk and not that much action. It is something that has to change.

Two countries that have increased solar usage happen to be Germany and Japan. Spain, France, Italy and South Korea are next in the list and where is the United States? Well, one thing is for certain and that it is not in the top 10 despite the fact that it is an industrialized nation.

We are in the middle of an energy crisis. Our fuel sources are running low, and we are leaving an irreversible mark on our environment. You will need to be prepared to spend about $35 on your DC motor, but it will be the heart of your windmill's operating system so you will be sure to recoup your costs quickly.

Depending on your individual building plan you will then need to order the other parts that you have set out on your to buy list. It is a great time to do this while you are waiting for your DC motor to come in.

You will also need to spend some time looking for a recycled body for your windmill project. By finding a recycled one, you will not only be saving yourself money, but you will also be practicing the earth consciousness that you were trying to take on with your original project of building a windmill.

Once you have purchased all of the supplies that you need you can begin production of your windmill. If you get the entire family in on the act then it may only take you about five days to put it together. Not only will building a windmill help to save you money, but it can also help bring your family together!

Ok... I've been working as a financial advisor for donkey's years. I also write articles, mainly about financial issues and money saving.
I was visiting a client recently, Rob, whom I had last seen a year ago. At that time he was in financial difficulty and looking at ways to save money and sort out his finances.

I did my job and sorted out the mess he was in but even I was surprised on my recent visit, when he told me about his money saving efforts (Some of these were a little bizarre).

Here's The Big Problem...

The ever increasing cost of utilities and power in particular. There appears to be no respite in the price rises and as Rob pointed out, little likelihood of any in the future.

Rob had built his own power supply....Yes really.

I decided to investigate this further. There are probably around 6/8 of these guides on the market but quite frankly most of them are of little use. They are either total nonsense or you need to be a scientist to do it.

British Gas recently announced an immediate price increase of 35%. This is just the latest in a round of price increases from energy suppliers in the UK. It is the same story in other parts of the world. As fuel costs rise, oil in particular and fossil fuels become more scarce, there is only one way power prices are going to go.

Of course the burning of fossil fuels is undesirable anyway adding greatly to the greenhouse effect and damaging the ozone layer but what is to be done?

The politicians appear to have turned full circle and are now advocating the use of nuclear energy. Again in the UK, new nuclear power stations are on the drawing board. Whilst throughout Europe nuclear power is generating more of our electricity.

In the USA according to the very latest press release more power stations are required many of them will be nuclear.

The Bush administration encourages investment in all renewable energy, including nuclear power generation, in order to reduce U.S. dependence on imports of crude oil. The administration provides incentives on the taxation side for that purpose. Do people really want more nuclear power? I have my doubts. The cost of construction not to mention the long term costs of de-commissioning.

So what are we as citizens going to do about it? The majority I guess will do nothing. We will continue to pollute the atmosphere or endanger our planet with more nuclear power plants and pay ever increasing costs to the energy providers. There is however an alternative, if we are prepared to act. Yes we can generate our own power. Even generate enough to sell it back to the power companies. How cool is that?

Now there are lots of companies out there who will supply "Solar Panels" for your roof and despite the initial cost it's a pretty good idea. Or You could plump for "Wind Power" again a really good idea. But I think the initial investment will deter most of us, at least for the present.

Now here is the really cool way%u2026.Build your own power plant! Yes I know it sounds a bit nutty, but here me out. I heard of a guy called Michael Harvey, a real "Renewable Energy Enthusiast" who not only did just that, building a windmill, built the whole thing himself for under $200 but has written a complete guide with blueprints, illustrated plans, everything and it works. He calls it earth4energy. Michael not only built his own power plant but gave his guide to several test subjects. Every one of whom was able to generate enough electricity to power their household appliances. Well I don't know about you but if we want to save this planet and in these difficult economic times, save some money too. Then this just might have wings.
