Building Fairy Houses

Make A House for a Fairy

Little girls who love fairies and enjoy playing dress up would also love to create a fairy house. That is what my daughter enjoyed when she was between the ages of three thru six(or maybe even seven). Every year for Halloween, she was either a princess, a fairy, or a fairy princess. For Christmas or birthdays, all she asked for was either fairy or princess toys. She wore tu tu's, fairy wings, joined ballet for a while, we watched girly movies, created fairy crafts, and we built fairy houses. I thought the fairy obsession would never end.

Fairy Houses by Tracy Kane

Learn how to build a home for a fairy with objects from nature

One book we found was called "Fairy Houses" by Tracy Kane, that was about a little girl who liked to build fairy houses and encouraged other little girls to use their imagination to do the same. So, we tried this, followed the fairy house instructions, and it was great fun. The rules were that you could only use items that are natural and found outside. So, we gathered some rocks, sticks, leaves, and grass and got to work. We were very pleased with our results. Would the fairies visit the beautiful fairy house we made? Would we see signs of their fairy magic? Would they dance around the trees when no one was looking?

Memories of Building Fairy Houses

Enjoy the fairy house stage with your kids

fairy-house2A few years has passed since we have been building fairy houses. My daughter no longer is pink, purple, and frilly. Barbies and Disney Princesses have been replaced by Twilight and afternoon phone calls. Oddly enough, even though I thought I had been overly saturated with girly girl, I find that I miss her excitement over those things. Recently, while flipping through my online albums (and an old blog post), I came across our fairy house. Our little house didn't last long. It was gone the following spring. The fairies never came but the magic left behind is the memory of the fun we had and the joy on my daughters face when the house was completed and her thoughts of fairies dancing around the tree when no one was looking.

We were given this book as a gift and my kids have spent countless hours looking at the pictures and have been inspired to build their own fairy houses.

Building Fairy Houses inFairy Village at the Botanical Garden

A special place for fairies

This last summer, my husband and I took the kids to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and my daughter was very excited to see the flowers and check out the Fairy Village. The village is in its own fenced off area of the gardens where children (and adults too) can make a house for small fairies to live in.

Much to my surprise, my daughter lost interest quickly but my 9 year old son was fascinated so he and I spent some time building a fairy house together. One thing that was really cute was a big stone with a lot of building supplies (stones, sticks, acorns, etc...) that was named "Gnome Dept". It was a lot of fun and he was quite proud of his handiwork when we were finished.

Make a Garden for Fairies

How to make a garden that fairies will love

Lets not forget that fairies like gardens so giving them a little plot to plant flowers in is always helpful. You can line the garden with a little rock fence, an acorn border, a stick fence, or get as creative as you would like. You can find fallen leaves or petals from flowers to decorate the garden with. Dried moss is also a nice accessory to use to dress it up a little. Just have fun with it and let the creative juices flow. You may find that long after the kids have lost interest, you'll still be there, working on a nice little home for a flower fairy.

I love it, I'd hoped someone made a lens about this, and then I found yours! It's amazing, I love the ideas (and the photographs and the paintings). I've featured your lens on mine: http://www.squidoo.com/why-grandma-would-celebrate-tell-a-fairy-tale-day . Thanks for sharing.

I so love fairies, although I've never built a fairy house -- maybe, cause I'm always shelled up in my house and never make it out into my yard. I love this lens -- so whimsical and beautiful! Great job!

"Gnome Depot" made me smile! I've been seeing a lot about fairy houses, lately and love idea of making a space in my garden for a little magic. Lovely lens, beautifully written and a joy to read!

I think it would be more fun to build a fairy house than to just buy one and plop it down. Neat lens.
