Building Web Traffic

I love Squidoo and I spend a great deal of time building and improving my lenses. I love to write and to share my thoughts with the world. Some of my lenses are just for fun. Others are a means of sharing my passions and interests.

People join Squidoo for a hundred different reasons, but one thing remains the same. They want and need traffic. What good does it do to build a lens if nobody sees it?

I've been on Squidoo for almost a year now and have built a lot of lenses. Some climbed the ranks fast and held their position, while others languished at the bottom. It took awhile to understand why some did well and others did not.

The purpose of this lens is to share my ideas on promotion and Building Web Traffic. Once you understand what can be done, its easier to set up a promotional plan that's right for you.

Select Key Words with Care

Optimizing your lenses starts before you start. Once you've decided on a topic, make sure the key words are in your lens URL, title, and subtitle. Key words are the words people type into Google, Yahoo and other search engines when looking for information on a topic. If your title and URL do not reflect your topic, your lens will not pop up in the search. The surfer will look elsewhere for the information he wants and needs.

There are several keyword research tools and services. My favorite is Google AdWords Keyword Tool

It doesn't matter how well you optimize your lens, if you don't have Quality Content, you will not be able to maintain a good traffic flow.

Need Help?

Google

I love to have other lensmasters visit my lens and leave comments. It adds to the sense of community on Squidoo, but most of my visits are organic traffic. Without organic traffic your lens will slowly sink to the bottom and die a quiet death.

Most of what I do to promote my lenses is geared toward organic traffic. Top of the list is submitting your lens to Google, Yahoo, and MSN. There are other search engines but the bulk of your traffic will come from these sights. If you want to Building Traffic on Squidoo, you need to be picked up by Google.

Backlinks are Vital

It doesn't matter if you have a website, blog or lens, if Google doesn't show any interest, no one else will either. Getting indexed is the first step, but you want organic traffic (traffic from outside Squidoo,) you have to do more. Google likes back links. The more you have, the better you will look to Google, and the higher your placement in the searches.

There are several things you can do to increase the number of links to your lens.

1. Start with your lens. Link your lens to itself. As you can see in the modules above, I've done this more than once. Don't over do it. Once or twice is enough.

2. Link your related lenses together by lensrolling them to each other.

3. Use the Featured Lenses Module to link your lenses together.

4. Join groups.

5. Submit your lens to social book marking sites.

6. Submit your lens to RSS feeds.

7. Add relevant tags.

Some feel that social networking sites are a waste of time, while others swear by them. I want organic traffic but I also want traffic from within Squidoo. I have at least a few lenses on every site.

I post my lenses on a variety of social networks and I post them on RedGage. RedGage is a social network with a twist. Not only do you get the backlink for your Squidoo lens, RedGage will pay you as well. Once you publish your lens post it on RedGage. You'll not regret it.

Blogging

I have several blogs and blog on every one of them at least a couple times a week. The purpose of my blogs is to aim traffic toward my lenses. They also provide valuable back links. If you don't have a blog, consider starting one. Like Squidoo, Blogger.com is free.

Writing Articles

This is where I see most people slide off the Learning Curve. Writing articles related to your lens topic takes time and effort, but its worth it. Shortly after joining Squidoo, I wrote an article and posted it on EzineArticles.com. It was related to and linked in the bio to my Red-tailed Hawk lens. I promptly forgot about it and focused my time and energy on building new lenses.

My Red-tailed Hawk lens did well throughout the spring and summer. I was still trying to get a handle on how to build quality lenses and didn't focus in on where the traffic was coming from. When my attention shifted to promoting my lenses, I came across an article that talked about the value of articles. I went back and looked. I was getting a great deal of traffic from that one little article and another valuable back link. Writing Articles to Promote your Lenses makes sense.

I'm still not writing the number of articles I need to, but I have 100+ lenses to manage and am always looking to building more. I try to write one to two articles a week. The more you do it, the faster and easier it is.
