Why a Greenhouse

Building your own greenhouse is easy with the tools. With today's prices, growing your own food is more and more important. Now the growing season does not need to end with the end of summer. Plus you can start growing earlier to have fresh food and flowers earlier in the year than ever. You can do this by building your own greenhouse.

Read on on how I used my greenhouse in Alaska, and how it can benefit you.

If you are in to organic gardening you may want to take this free course and get a e book on organic gardening.

My GreenhouseThis is a picture of my greenhouse in North Pole, Alaska. It came in handy in this cold weather climate and would come in handy in any climate. Here is how I used it. The growing season is very short in Interior Alaska. In fact it goes from June 1st to the last week of August, if we are lucky. So our goal is to try and extend the growing season. I did this by effectively using my greenhouse.

Here is how I did it. I would start seedlings such as tomatoes, flowers, cabbages etc in doors in mid March. In mid April or there about, I would heat the greenhouse to get the temperature of the soil in the greenhouse above 65 degrees. (the soil temperature on the outside does not get above 65 degrees till the first week of June, this is the temperature needed to effectively grow plants and vegetables.)

Plus I learned how to do Organic Gardening.

Once the soil temperature in the greenhouse is above 65 degrees, about the last week of April, I would plant the seedlings in the reenhouse thereby extending my growing season by over a month.

So when June 1st came I would be able to plant my flowers outside and plant my vegetables outside too. I would also plant more and keep vegetables going till late September. I just gained another month of growing season. So if you live in the lower 48 states, you can extend your growing season by two months. And depending on where you live, you more than likely will not have to heat your greenhouse.

I could not grow tomatoes out of the greenhouse so I learned about growing them here at Growing Tomatoes.
