Building Greenhouses
Greenhouses are an amazing way to continue your love of gardening throughout the winter months or at the very least start your seedlings early in the spring and keep your plants healthy late into the fall. Those of us who love growing lovely plants/flowers and eating great fresh produce also love having a greenhouse to extend our growing season.
Have you decided to build a greenhouse?
Where do you begin?
It's difficult to know where to begin, right? It is in the planning! In the previous blog I talked about some of the things to consider when beginning your planning for your new greenhouse. There are four areas in building a greenhouse which you need to plan very carefully. These are:
1) Frame The frame is often made from lumber, pvc, aluminum, galvanized steel or fiberglass. Each comes with different costs associated. Galvanized steel's best feature is that it is strong. Aluminum is usually available in building supply stores, doesn't rust, and is strong. PVC is a material that is easy to work with, cheap, and available. Wood can be used if it is treated to prevent deterioration. Fiberglass won't conduct heat or cold which helps to keep the heat in and the cold out of your greenhouse.
2) Base/Flooring When choosing what you will use for your flooring, you must first know what you will use for the frame. If the greenhouse is intended to be a permanent structure then a gravel floor is nice. Concrete or pavers can also be used, but a means for drainage will be needed- so gravel is usually the best bet. Also if concrete is used make sure the floor has some texture as it will often be wet and slippery
3) Windows Will your greenhouse have windows? These are often made from glass or poly materials and used in permanent structures made of wood or steel frames. Glass is more durable but also breakable. The windows should be able to open to provide adequate ventilation.
4) Covering The greenhouse covering should be made up of polythene which is resistant to ultra-violet rays. The covering is to be placed using thin battens which will hold the polythene to the greenhouse. One must be cautious about the kind of polythene used. Most suppliers only have polythene which is not ultra-violet-resistant.

How About A Vegetable Garden Greenhouse
Save money growing your organic veggies
If you don't like the higher prices of buying organic vegetables from stores and markets, you can stop buying them. Rather, you can grow your own vegetables at home. How, you say? Just by putting a vegetable greenhouse in the backyard.Having a vegetable greenhouse provides many benefits. You can grow natural food that is healthy that does not contain potentially hazardous chemicals used by some growers or stores to increase growth or make them just look pretty. You can just grow the things you prefer to eat and want to grow. Seeds for your vegetables are inexpensive and certainly much less than buying whole produce in stores. Your food bill will be reduced because you save so much on your fresh organic vegetables.
If you area interested in having your own greenhouse, there are many things to consider. The three greenhouse types are warm, cold, and cool. The warm type is going to require a heating source, which will end up costing some money. Sources include propane, oil, gas or heat lamps which require electricity. This greenhouse is perfect for growing all year round.
The sun is the heat source for cold ones. It may not the best option to have this one because the veggies able to grow in them are limited by the length of your seasons. The cool variety, however, can be heated during colder months and many types of veggies can be grown.
A very large selection of vegetables are able to be grown in a greenhouse. The easier ones that you can grow are carrots, lettuce, radishes, cucumbers, squash, peppers, eggplant, beans, and tomatoes. These are the favorites of most people as you can tell because they are always available in your grocery stores.
If you would like to have your veggies be home grown, then a vegetable greenhouse is perfect for you. They require maintenance as any plant or garden needs. As long as you are willing to put in the time and effort, your produce expenses will be severely reduced. You will be amazed at how much you can grow even in a very small greenhouse.
