Mike Dillard's Books are Good... but How Far Can "Building on a Budget" Really Take You?
Mike Dillard's new book, Building on a Budget, introduces network marketers to five low-cost strategies that generate prospects through Social Web 2.0 Internet Marketing.
Today we'll discuss these 5 Business Building Strategies and share the pros and cons we discovered in Dillard's Building on a Budget book, including some costly pitfalls to avoid if you're looking to build your business BIG on a shoe-string budget.

A Look at Dillard's Top 5 'Attraction Marketing' Strategies
The Pros and Cons of the book, "Building on a Budget"... and Some Major Pitfalls to Avoid
First, the Upsides of Dillard's Book...
Mike Dillard has a great writing style. Just like his Magnetic Sponsoring and MLM Traffic Formula course, Building on a Budget is exciting, to-the-point and shares valuable information that every network marketer will benefit from.
In Building on a Budget, Dillard focuses primarily upon these five Social Marketing methods that networkers can use to generate low cost (or free) leads continuously.
5 Building on a Budget Strategies:
1. Craigslist
2. Video Sharing -- Ex. #1 -- Ex. #2 -- Ex. #3
3. Press Releases
4. Blogs
5. Squidoo (where you are right now)
Dillard also dives into describing the funded sponsoring proposal concept, which aids a network marketer in generating much needed cash-flow while building their network marketing business with monetization--as most traditional business do.
For the most part, though, Dillard is helping you get set up with the five 'Social Marketing' methods mentioned above. If you follow up on what you read, and can connect the dots, it will be a great resource for you.
Building on a Budget Pitfalls...
There are a few major pitfalls I'd like to point out to you, which Dillard does not mention in his Building on a Budget book. Knowing these pitfalls can save you a lot of time and make you a lot more money as you move into Internet attraction marketing.
Building on a Budget -- Pitfall #1
First, it's important to note that Google and Yahoo (and other search engines) will often penalize groups of people who duplicate one another on the search engines.
So when Mike Dillard teaches about Squidoo, for example, it's going to create a problem you need to be aware of... so you can avoid it.
Avoid the 'Footprint Penalty'...
Squidoo, which is the site you're at right now, is a great way to create a lot of traffic. But when Google (or Yahoo and other search engines) see a large number of people coming to a specific location within a short period of time while using the same key words, they will often penalize everyone in that group. This is called 'footprints.' The search engines look for a pattern and when they find it they kill it.
This doesn't mean you are forever banned or anything so serious, but it does mean you could spend a lot of time trying to come up on the search engines for a key word like, Building on a Budget, only to find that your work was not rewarded with a high ranking.
So if you're going to implement what's taught in Building on a Budget, do it with this 'footprint penalty' issue in mind.
Use this knowledge to target different key words... don't move with the pack and you'll be safe. Target key words that other readers of Dillard's Buiding on a Budget book wouldn't be as likely to focus upon in their own marketing at Squidoo.
Or, if you don't like to play it safe, know more than the people reading Mike Dillard's book about how to get the #1 Search Engine Listings on Google and Yahoo.

Craigslist: Building on a Budget Pitfall #2
Building on a Budget described Craigslist.org as one of the top options for generating leads. Craigslist is a good tip, but keep this in mind...
Some Craigslist Drawbacks...
A 'Building on a Budget' strategy like Craigslist will not provide the same long-term benefits as other options available.
While Craigslist is easy to teach and requires less thinking to implement, it's not as powerful as other Social Marketing "Building on a Budget" strategies.
For example, at any time Craigslist could crack down on the large numbers of marketers who are filling up their content with ads related to network marketing. In fact I would be surprised if this doesn't happen.
Craigslist will protect its content and always side with its 'regular visitors' over a group of marketers. So don't be surprised if something works today and not tomorrow at Craigslist.
No Compounding Effect...
In addition, Craigslist does not provide an opportunity to create long-term results on the search engines, which you can get with other social marketing methods that are fairly easy to learn.
No Relationship Pre-Building...
Also, Craigslist does not provide an opportunity to pre-build a relationship with your prospects like other social marketing strategies, which is one of the most empowering aspects to using attraction marketing...
Craigslist is simply not as powerful as creating Internet content.
Building on a Budget & Creating Internet Content...
Dillard does share a little about creating Internet content when he discusses video, press releases and Squidoo. But understand, there are so many details and other forms of marketing you'll need to incorporate to get significant results, and his book simply doesn't describe all of these details.
Building on a Budget Pitfall #3: It's Incomplete...
Mike Dillard's Building on a Budget is short and sweet... and it's good. But don't expect it to fill in all the gaps for you. If you do get (or have) the book, I suggest finding someone who will actually show you how to set up your marketing while you follow along with them in a click-by-click fashion visually.
Final thoughts on Dillard's book, Building on a Budget...
Dillard is fantastic at selling concepts. And since I am convinced that network marketers will be far more successful in their business if they learn these new Internet marketing methods, I highly recommend everyone reads this book.
At the same time, I realize that many people will buy the book and think it's all they need. My experience tells me that this book will only be your introduction... and a great one!

I totally agree with each of these points Mike. I think Mike Dillard has done an outstanding job with his books, but of course there are going to be some limitations to just sharing a few of the 'Building on a Budget' strategies as you call them. And I think the video tutorials you're talking about are a huge missing piece of the puzzle for most networkers. Thanks for all you're doing out there! Posted March 26, 2008 |

Mike I agree with you totally. I got my copy of Building omn a budget last night and went through it before I went to bed. It's an easy read and it's full of great info. But since I've been following you at Renegade University I like the way that you are able to point out minor pitfalls that less experienced marketers might overlook. Thanks for the leadership.
