Bulimia Treatment - Can Bulimia Go Away Without Treatment?
First are self help books on eating disorders. These books tackle different approaches and are written by people from different backgrounds. Some books just focus on examining the reasons for dieting and the dissatisfaction in body image that is the initial cause of dieting. Some books provide information and background on binge eating and detailed steps on how to overcome it. Authors of these books range from psychologists, psychiatrists, nutrition and diet experts, and even people who have formerly suffered from bulimia. From time to time, magazines and other women's publications also publish articles on eating disorders that usually narrate the experiences of bulimic patients or the experiences of their family and friends.
A word of caution should be given to parents if their teenage girl insists on treatment through this route. There are studies that report that reading books and articles on the topic of eating disorders have often counter productive effects on a teenager's impressionable mind. Instead of acting as a tool to warn against the effects of eating disorders, these can encourage a girl with bulimia to continue the binge and purge episodes instead. There are instances that the former patient's narration of his or her experiences in the books and articles might act as an instruction manual and copied by the reader.
There are also sites on the Internet that claim to cure bulimia without the help of doctors and medication. These sites often sell audio downloads or downloadable manuals that claim to help people who suffer from eating disorders. They highlight that this kind of treatment is done at the privacy of one's home thus will shield one from reaction from other people if they found out he or she is bulimic. However, this can just reinforce a person's isolation which is why the eating disorder was manifested in the first place.
These self-help treatments might work if one has a very strong will. However, the chances of failing are very high due to the lack of a support system. Bulimia is without doubt is difficult to overcome and symptoms don't vanish entirely. Bulimia treatment will take months to years thus a support system is necessary. Going through it alone will make one susceptible to relapse especially if something stressful happens and coping mechanisms fail.
Psychological methods of treating eating disorders point out the importance of having a strong support system in making the treatment effective. If finances are the hindrance in seeking treatment, one may try going to support group sessions for bulimics. These support groups are often free or cost lower than going to therapy.
