Why buy bulk Lego bricks?

Unless you're looking for a particular Lego set or specialty pieces, it's better to buy Legos in bulk.

It's economical: you get a huge amount of Lego at a fraction of the price. If your children just like to build and build and build without dismantling their older creations, bulk Legos are your best buy. You can buy large new bins of Lego, or (even better) buy secondhand and used bulk Legos locally or online. Of course, used LEGO is even cheaper than new bins, if cost is an issue.

Your children will love you for it!

Tips for buying used bulk Legos online

  • 1Watch for non-Lego blocks. Good knowledgeable sellers will remove these beforehand. Ask if it's not clear whether non-Lego bricks are included.
  • 2Ask about how the weight was determined. Does it include the plastic bins?
  • 3If you're hoping for Lego sets, check the lot for instruction booklets. This is a giveaway that there are set pieces in the lot.
  • 4If buying online, ask for photos of the lot. You want to see a nice spread-out photo of the Legos. Don't buy if the seller says you'll receive a lot similar to the one shown.

Buying Used LEGO locally

It's possible to find LEGO pieces for sale at local garage sales and thrift stores, but you have to hunt them down. Here's some helful advice for finding and scoring more LEGOs...
  • 1Check the local garage sale listings every week to look for those with toys. If you see one with LEGO listed specifically, you'll have a lot of competition!
  • 2Go early to garage sales. Any LEGO included in the sale will sell within the first few minutes.
  • 3If you see a LEGO bin, check carefully to make sure the contents are indeed building blocks, and (at least mostly) genuine LEGO.
  • 4Check anything in the way of mixed bricks to make sure it contains LEGO and not just clone bricks.
  • 5Check out any clone bins - they might contain all or partly genuine LEGO!
  • 6Check for broken or chewed parts, and other kinds of tots mixed in. Check for cleanliness and stickiness (ewww!) but be aware that you can wash LEGO parts in the clothes washer and rescue so pretty nasty-looking batches.
  • 7For more - much more! - information on buying LEGO from anywhere, online or offline, new or used, check out my Buying LEGO FAQ.

I had never even thought about this before, but if your kid is really into creating and building things this concept TOTALLY makes sense. Thanks for broadening my horizons!

I think legos are one of the greatest toys ever created. They build imagination, creativity, dexterity skills, and so much more.
