Bad check collection - business options

Free bad check recovery service for bad checks

When a bad check is received, business owners need to make a choice on how to proceed. Some simply file away the bad check and regard the matter as lost money. Others contact their local District Attorney to see if their Prosecutor's office will help collect the bounced check. While using the local District Attorney can be a good option in some cases, this usually requires some paperwork and the collection process can be very slow.

Another option many businesses have tried is a "check guarantee service." These services often claim business owners will NEVER AGAIN get a returned check. In reality the business still gets returned checks, but these are paid for by the check guarantee service. Unless a business mainly receives high dollar checks (several hundred to several thousand dollars per check), these services benefit only one party: the check guarantee service. This is a very expensive option and usually sold to businesses that do not need it.

The best option for most businesses is a free check recovery service. In most cases a bad check collection service will work to return to businesses the full face value back on collected NSF checks. In a few cases these agencies will also work to collect stop payment and closed accounts for free (for an example of this see www.bumchecks.com). On this same site but a different page is actually a list of some of the better known bad check collection services (www.bumchecks.com/checkrecoverycompetitors). A returned check processing service can often make check collection completely free because of the "state bad check fee" (www.bumchecks.com/statefees), a cost paid by bad check writers.

At the present time more and more District Attorney offices are looking into establishing a "bad check restitution program." This is also known as a "check diversion program," or a "worthless check unit." For a link on how a Prosecutor's office can outsource bad check collection and start a bad check restitution program, see http://www.bumchecks.com/districtattorney.

In addition to District Attorneys looking into bad check diversion, your local Chamber of Commerce may be getting into the act of check recovery as well.
Many Chamber of Commerce organizations have begun to partner with check collection services as this helps both their Chamber members as well as the local Chamber. For an overview of how a Chamber of Commerce might work with a bad check collection service, see www.bumchecks.com/chamberofcommerce
