Help! My Bunk Bed Is Driving Me Crazy!

Ranked #3,057 in Home & Garden, #37,258 overall

No One Told Me It Would Be Like This!

A bunk bed seems like such a great idea. It will give the kids more room to play, it gives them a bit of their own space within a shared room, and bunks are fun, They look nice, especially the ones pictured online or the ones in the furniture catalogs. This bunk bed pictured to the left looks so good, who wouldn't want to buy it. But when you get it home and assemble it, will you be able to recreate this look? Bunks are hard to make up and even harder to keep looking nice. But, there is hope and that's where bunk bed huggers come in.

Bunk Beds In The Real World

Are you are having trouble getting your bed to look like those beautiful ones that sold you on the bed in the first place. Join the crowd. Below are some typical problems associated with bunks and bedding.

Some people use sheets and throws to make their bunks.

Shshend throws on bunk beds

Out of frustration with trying to find bedding for bunks, many people choose to use sheets alone. The fitted sheet doesn't look too bad but the draping top sheets are never on straight. The loose, hanging fabric can be a safety issue.

Some people choose to use regular comforters on their bunks.

Regular comforters look nice on this particular bed but will they stay that way? It is not easy to get them looking this way in the first place. You would need to climb the ladder to reach the wall side for bed making. The one advantage to this kind of bedding on the bottom bunk is that it partially hides unsightly under bed storage.

Regular comforters hang too low if you have under bed storage.

bedding hanging over drawers

In this picture, it looks like the top comforter has been tucked and the bottom is a regular comforter that hangs down over drawers. This may only have one bottom row of drawers but many beds have 2 rows of drawers. Regular comforters are not the best on any bed with under bed drawers or a trundle bed.

This room looks way to busy with bedding.

Busy with Bedding

The color combinations look great in this dorm room however, all the bedding looks busy to me. Again, there are a couple loose comforters. It would be difficult to keep this bed looking nice.

This is a combination of sheets, throws, and a blanket.

messy bunk bed

This just isn't a very tidy looking bed. There is a sheet and throw on the top and a comforter or blanket on the bottom. It serves the purpose but it could look better.

Maybe no bedding at all would be easier.

No Bedding Bunks

This is the last resort. No bedding and using sleeping bags to sleep. Obviously, this isn't in a home but you could get so frustrated that you might attempt this. The only thing that would need laundered would be the sleeping bags.

This is an example of makeshift tucking.

Someone understands the concept of a fitted comforter and is trying to make this bedding appear to be fitted. It will need to be tucked again and again not only on the side away from the wall but also on the wall side. Who wants to tuck it once let alone over and over.

Loose bedding can be a real safety concern.

loose bedding on bunk

We all know that with bunk beds, you don't want gaps or anything that could cause entrapment or strangulation. You may think that's extreme but it has happened. The more tight and tidy the bunk bed, the better. Also, you don't want your child making unnecessary trips up and down the ladder at night to retreive fallen bedding.

Regular comforters work on this bunk but it could look better.

Two comforters don't look bad but it will be hard to keep them in place.

The Bridge Between Here And There - Bunk Bed Huggers

We all want our bunk beds to look neat and tidy so how do we get from here to there? As I mentioned before, it's bunk bed huggers. Bunk bed huggers are special fitted comforters that were designed for bunks, lofts, or beds that are hard to make. Huggers are sometimes called Bed Caps or Snugglers but they are all the same, just fitted comforters. The bottom two corners either have elastic or they are sewn tailored to fit on to the mattress. The sides are a bit shorter than a regular comforter. They work well on all kinds of beds, captains beds, loft beds, platform beds, dorm beds, even regular beds.

Solid Color Bed Caps

Solid Color Bunk Bed CapThis is the most basic bunk bed hugger you can buy. The solid color bunk bed caps are elasticized around the corners at the foot of the comforter. They allow a snug fit to prevent the comforter from sliding off. The fabric is 200 thread count, 50/50 cotton/poly blend and they come in a wide assortment of vibrant colors. Shams are available with ruffled or tailored finish. Mix or match the colors to your preference. They are machine washable and ship in 2-15 days from when the order is placed. Solid color huggers can work with any already established decor.
