Information for People with Pet Bunnies

Hello! Welcome to my bunny lens. I am dedicating it to my rabbit Pumpkin (pictured).

I ended up with him by accident (from a friend) and had never had a rabbit before. I have learned so much about rabbits as pets, and I'm so glad I have Pumpkin!

Rabbits are great pets, and I want people to be able to take care of them properly. I've included a bunch of great links and shopping sites for your pleasure. Also, the CafePress shops featured below donate their proceeds to rabbit rescues!

Half of all proceeds made from link referral profits earned on this page will go to a rabbit rescue charity. So click to your heart's content! Enjoy!

P.S. Do you like this lens? Please go to the top of the page and give me a "Star Rating" - it's positive feedback for me and encourages me to keep updating the page! Have suggestions or bunny questions? Leave a comment below!

Things you might not know about rabbits

  • Rabbits can be litterbox trained.
  • Rabbits energetically flop onto their side when they are comfortable and relaxed.
  • A baby rabbit is called a kit, or kitten.
  • Rabbits often don't show when they're hurt or sick because they are "prey" animals, and weak prey get caught first in the wild.
  • Rabbits do a funny hop called a "binky" when they are happy or excited.

Is a rabbit for me?

Please make sure you can answer "yes" to the questions below before adopting or purchasing a rabbit to live in your home. Unfortunately, a very high number of rabbits end up in shelters or rescues because their owners weren't prepared for having a rabbit. Make sure you never have to give your pet away!
  1. Do you have enough space? For a medium-size rabbit (5-7 lbs), the cage should be *at least* 3 feet by 1.5 feet, and tall enough for the rabbit to stand up on its hind legs, and you need a "bunny-proof" area of your home for your bunny to hop around in several hours a day. May people keep their rabbit in a "pen", or fenced off part of a room, instead of a cage. Rabbits must be housed indoors to live a happy healthy life - they are very sensitive to extreme temperatures and scared easily by predators, and many parasites and insects bother them outdoors.
  2. Are you patient? Having any pet, especially a baby bunny, requires lots of time and energy for training, cleaning, and care. Pumpkin used to chew on the carpet, and it took about a year of patient training to break him of that bad habit.
  3. Are you sure you're not allergic to pet dander or hay? Rabbits shed, and many people are irritated by the loose fur. Also, rabbits' diets require hay, so any allergy to hay could pose a problem. Unfortunately, many rabbits are given away because of allergies.
  4. Does everyone in your family want a rabbit? Is there an adult willing to be the primary caretaker of the rabbit? Many rabbits are friendly enough to play quietly with children, but caring for a rabbit requires adult supervision, and someone willing to drive the rabbit to the vet or drive to the pet store for supplies when needed is a requirement.
  5. Do you have enough money? The daily care of a rabbit is fairly inexpensive, but vet bills are not! I spend several hundred dollars a year on vet bills for Pumpkin.
  6. Have you done your research? Please read the links to the House Rabbit Society and other websites that offer lots of information about rabbits and what they are like. I had a lot of learning to do and even considered giving Pumpkin away at one point because he wasn't what I expected and I didn't know how to properly care for him and he wasn't happy. I'm so happy I found an online community that helped and now Pumpkin and I are good buddies :)
  7. Are you ready to have a pet for 7 or more years? Many people are surprised that well-cared for rabbits can live as long as most dogs. Someone I met had a rabbit that lived for 14 years! When my friend gave me her 2-month-old rabbit, I figured I'd have it for 3 or 4 more years. Now, Pumpkin is 5 and I hope he's around for many more!
