BURL IVES - SINGER, ACTOR, STAR

Burl Ives, 85, a 20th-century minstrel and balladeer who brought new life and popularity to some of America's oldest folk music with songs of children, history, animals, insects and loves won and lost, died of complications related to cancer of the mouth April 14 at his home in Anacortes, Wash.

Singer - It Was Meant To Be

He recalled (in a 1990 interview in The Decatur Herald and Review) college President, Dr. Livingston Lord, looking at his grades and telling him, "'I believe you have too restless a spirit to be an educator. You'd better look around a little.' My clothes and things were in the fraternity house, but I didn't want to bother with them. I just went down the road."

EATING GOOBER PEAS

Sitting by the roadside on a summer's day
Chatting with my mess-mates, passing time away
Lying in the shadows underneath the trees
Goodness, how delicious, eating goober peas.

Peas, peas, peas, peas
Eating goober peas
Goodness, how delicious,
Eating goober peas.

When a horse-man passes, the soldiers have a rule
To cry out their loudest, "Mister, here's your mule!"
But another custom, enchanting-er than these
Is wearing out your grinders, eating goober peas.

Peas, peas, peas, peas
Eating goober peas
Goodness, how delicious,
Eating goober peas.

Just before the battle, the General hears a row
He says "The Yanks are coming, I hear their rifles now."
He looks down the roadway, and what d'ya think he sees?
The Georgia Militia cracking goober peas.

flags goober

Peas, peas, peas, peas
Eating goober peas
Goodness, how delicious,
Eating goober peas.

I think my song has lasted just about enough.
The subject is interesting, but the rhymes are mighty rough.
I wish the war was over, so free from rags and fleas
We'd kiss our wives and sweethearts, say good-bye to goober peas.

Peas, peas, peas, peas
Eating goober peas
Goodness, how delicious,
Eating goober peas.

THE DONUT SONG

Written by Burl Ives

Burl Ives - The Donut Song

cho: When you walk the streets you'll have no cares
If you walk the lines and not the squares
As you go through life make this your goal
Watch the donut, not the hole.

It's written on the rainbow, in letters made of gold
Written on the rainbow, there's wisdom to behold
My friend the little sparrow flew
Close enough to see
Written on a rainbow is this philosophy.

(Repeat verse)
Little angels wrote it, so folks on earth would know

(Repeat Chorus two times)

I'm off to jolly England where
Bulldogs all wear pants
Off to Pago Pago where alligators dance
My friend the little sparrow will
Take me where he flies
Even to the rainbow to read with my own eyes

(Chorus) (Repeat First Verse)

and Flag Day

How appropriate! He loved his country.

Nice tribute to Burl Ives...On my American side I am related to the Ives line that Burl Ives is from...My grandmother Georgianna Ives was from the clock-makers side of the family.
