Latest statement and actions from the Burma Campaign UK
The first priority for the Burma Campaign UK was to make sure that the world knew what was happening in Burma. The question now is, how will the world
respond?
10,000 people marched through the streets of London on Saturday, and 200 protests took place in 30 countries around the world. Visit www.burmacampaign.org.uk/demonstrations
and www.facebook.com/photosto see pictures.
And the pressure is working. We are pleased to be able to tell you that the British government is now using its considerable diplomatic resources to
push for international action on Burma. The government is backing many of the steps we have been campaigning on for so long, such as action by the
United Nations Security Council, targeted economic sanctions by the European Union, and the personal engagement of the Prime Minister and Foreign
Secretary. You can view our media release at:
BUT WE ARE NOT THERE YET! The United Nations Security Council has still not agreed on a statement condemning the brutal crackdown, and the European Union has yet to agree on targeted economic sanctions. Now is a critical time, please spare a couple of minutes to take these urgent actions.
TAKE ACTION
The Burma Campaign UK and MTV have joined forces again to call for action by the United Nations Security Council. Visit www.mtvburmaaction.com to email the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.
TAKE ACTION
Email European Union governments calling on them to agree targeted economic sanctions that will ensure European companies no longer help pay for the
guns and the bullets used against peaceful protesters in Burma. Visit:EU Sanctions

Still some hope as Burma's junta releases 80 detained monks
YANGON (Reuters) - Burma's junta released 80 monks rounded up last week in a crackdown on the biggest anti-government protests in nearly 20 years, one of those freed said on Wednesday.
The monk, in his mid-20s but too nervous to give any more details of his identity, said he and 79 brethren were returned to their Mingala Yama monastery in Yangon shortly after midnight.
The remaining 16 of 96 arrested during a raid on the monastery -- among hundreds arrested in similar raids on at least 15 Yangon monasteries -- were expected to be freed soon, he said.
The monk said they had been held at a former government technical institute in northern Yangon's Insein district, and been subjected to verbal -- but not physical -- abuse during interrogation. Detainees had received two meals a day, he said.

And that is that. There may be more protests, but they're winding down because the outside intervention that was essential never ever remotely looked like materialising. The UN are putting on a show for skin-deep veneer's sake, pretending to action, but that gambari will fly out within a day or two with no gains at all. Brown and Bush will return to their iran agenda. China will hold the Olympics, no problems. India and Thailand will continue to do business with the rogues in Burma. ASEAN will continue to not interfere with each other.
The Burmese people's aspirations have yet again been beaten by the hardware, by the iron batons and by the bullets.
They'll go back to an even worse police state than before, begging the belief that that is possible, but oh yes it is. Freedom? What the f**k is that?
And the world will go back to its own preoccupations. The Thais and Chinese to their efforts at making headway in their lives, getting the food into the family's tables.
The western people will return to their soaps and shopping.
Sorry, did something just happen?? Did i blink, or was there an attempted uprising?? Nah, sorry, can't see nothing. It must have been a dream.
Ta ra.
We are an evolving organism. We are constantly changing for the better. It might be three steps back, four forward, but whatever and however slow, we continue to evolve.
As a species we can only go forward. But right now it seem so fucking slow.
The current plight of the Burmese, allied with the internet, gave us a chance to really push the leaders of this world. Gave us a chance to help our Burmese brethren attain freedom while at the same time show the leaders that we are a force.
But, no. We botched it.
Posters on this thread knew, but the wider world botched it.
Go on, smash those iron bars against the skulls of monks and ordinary people. Pump the bullets into their flesh and blood. Kill em off.
We don't care, we're just worried about our own lives. Sorry burmese, fight your own fight, we saw this time, we knew this time, unlike in 1988, but as you can see mates, we just don't give a toss.
Ta ra."
