The Affectionate and Accidental Burmilla Cat
How many cousins do I have? New cat breeds seem to spring up overnight and I freely admit that I have not heard much about the Burmilla before.
The subject cropped up almost accidentally, in a snatch of overheard conversation, the mention of a cat 'purrfect for a quiet home'. (I thought they meant me at first). I have a dire premonition - another cat may be brought into my home! Before I allow this to happen, more studies must be carried out on the suitability of a submissive companion to me. With this in mind I undertook my own research into the nature of the beast and turned up some curious facts. Like the story of the Burmilla Beginning.
This story began not quite thirty years ago, when Fate arranged a friendly encounter between Jemari Sanquist and Bambino Lilac Faberge.

Sanquist and Faberge
It was Fate!
One evening somewhere in England, a fine Chinchilla named Sanquist was resting in his comfortable home shortly before he was due to be neutered. Elsewhere in the house, in her own quarters, was a lovely young lilac Burmese.
Now this young Burmese, whose name was Faberge, was probably engaged in maidenly dreams of her fair knight, for a partner of her own lineage and breed had been long planned for this royal cat, the time was ripe and the contract was to be honoured the very next day.
Fate stepped in to meddle with the oft-laid plans of cats and men.
On that very night as the two cats, unaware of each other, napped peacefully, a human cleaner left the door to Faberge's room open. Poor Lass! She wandered off through hallways and staircases, lost and calling for her valiant prince. Sanquist heard the call.
The rest is history.
What is a Burmilla Cat?
The Burmilla is a cross between the Chinchilla Persian and Burmese breeds.
Faberge produced four stunning female kittens. The little ones were all short haired and coloured a delicate black-shaded silver. All four of them had a quiet and friendly temperament too.
From that accidental beginning, the Burmilla breed received official recognition in 1997.
The Basic Facts :
The Burmilla is a small to medium sized cat, looking somewhat like a Burmese at first glance, but not quite as heavy or muscular, with much silkier fur, and without that Burmese frown.
The eyes of the Burmilla are gold to yellowish in youth and as they reach maturity, become a deep and lustrous green. Burmillas wear eyeliner to heighten their good looks.
Important facts :
The Burmilla has an intelligent inquisitive nature and a most affectionate personality. In temperament they are sociable, playful, and affectionate, and get along well with other animals.
That sounds as if it may suit.

- Hi there,
just noticed you had some info about my Burmillas and Dobermanns on this site, just thought i would let you know that all our Burmillas and Persians are socialised with the Dobermanns and everyone gets along famously...the dogs are very respectful of the cats and extreemly gentle and all our puppies leave here trained to being kitten and cat friendly...its all about imprinting properly.
We believe we have the best of both worlds cats that behave like dogs and dogs that respect cats! And its so much easier to live when everyone just gets along...its great fun!!!

Blindness is a significant public health issue in Cambodia. Over 160,000 people are blind and an additional 20,000 become blind each year. The main cause of blindness is cataract, which can be treated by a simple 15 minute operation at an average cost of $25 (AUD$35). (That's the price of a crayfish tail).
