Burn -- an Anna Pigeon Novel by Author Nevada Barr
In Burn, Anna is on administrative leave to recover from physical and emotional traumas suffered in Nevada Barr's previous two Anna Pigeon novels, Winter Study and Borderline. Of course she doesn't find the rest and relaxation that she had planned on. Anna gets pulled into helping a woman from Seattle try to find her two missing young daughters who she thinks were abducted and brought to New Orleans.
Even though Anna is staying with a friend of hers who's a ranger at the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, the plot of Burn really has nothing to do with murders within a National Park, unlike the earlier Anna Pigeon books.

"Burn" by Nevada Barr
For rest and relaxation, Anna is staying for awhile with a friend, Geneva, who's a blind gospel singer and ranger in the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park. Of course she doesn't get her rest and relaxation!
Anna comes across a filthy, creepy character, Jordan, a gutter punk who is leasing an apartment from Geneva, and she starts to investigate his background. She's come to the conclusion that he's an unsavory character with perverted inclinations and needs to be exposed. There is more to Jordan than meets the eye though.

During this time, we're also introduced to Clare from Seattle, who returns home in the middle of the night to find that her two young daughters are missing. Her husband and the nanny are also gone. Soon after the police come to investigate, her house explodes and burns. The firefighters eventually carry out three burned corpses -- one adult male, and two children.Clare is charged with the murders, but she knows the house was empty when she had returned! She finds a few clues that suggest that maybe the two burned children were not her own, and that there is a connection to a brothel that involves children in New Orleans. To avoid getting caught, Clare dons a disguise, and makes her way to New Orleans. There her thread of the story is connected to Anna's thread. Anna helps Clare investigate what may have happened to her children, her husband, and the nanny.
Here we're introduced to a seamier side (and hopefully truly fictional side) of New Orleans, including the disturbing use of children ("jewels") in private brothels frequented by certain men of power, with perverted tastes, within the city.
I'm always uneasy when a story line includes the murder or abuse of children. There is always something "not right" or "kosher" about it in my mind, even if it is fiction. So this plot bothered me, although the novel is very well-written and it held my attention. Personally, I also thought the plot fell apart a little toward the end -- the well-woven story lines aren't resolved as neatly or as realistically as I had hoped. But still this is a very well-wrought novel for the most part, and a good addition to the Anna Pigeon series.

From the product description
Anna Pigeon, a Ranger with the National Park Service, is ... on administrative leave from her job as she recovers from the traumas of the past couple of months. While the physical wounds have healed, the emotional ones are still healing. Anna decides to go and stay with an old friend from the Park Service, Geneva, who works as a singer at the New Orleans Jazz NHP. She isn't in town long before she crosses paths with a tenant of Geneva's, a creepy guy named Jordan. She discovers what seems to be an attempt to place a curse on her-a gruesomely killed pigeon marked with runic symbols; and begins to slowly find traces of very dark doings in the heart of post-Katrina New Orleans. Tied up in all of this is Jordan, who is not at all what he appears to be; a fugitive mother accused of killing her husband and daughters in a fire; and faint whispers of unpleasant goings-on in the heart of the slowly recovering city.
Now it will take all of Anna's skills learned in the untamed outdoors to navigate the urban jungle in which she finds herself, to uncover the threads that connect these seemingly disparate people, and to rescue the most vulnerable of creatures from the most savage of animals.
“Another richly woven, complex murder mystery involving National Park ranger, Anna Pigeon”

"Old Man River. What a crock, Anna thought....the Mississippi [River] was so unquestionably female, the great mother, a blowsy, fecund, fertile juggernaut that nurtured and destroyed with the same sublime indifference."

Nevada Barr's Newest Book "The Rope"
Released January, 2012
Overall, I enjoyed The Rope more than Burn. The Rope shows a much younger and less self-assured Anna Pigeon than we've seen in other books. This is where Anna's work in the National Park system starts.

- Started to listen to this book on audio, but it was a little bit on the gory side so stopped midway through. Might pick up the hard back and read it. I tend to skip over the ugly parts.

- I've read all of the Anna Pigeon mysteries except Burn, which I will read reasonably soon. I've visited several of the parks Barr has written about, so it's given me additional interest in the books. Barr has really put Anna through an awful lot in the last few books, and overall the books have taken on a darker tone.

- A very descriptive review and one of the better ones I've read here on Squidoo. This is a series I've not heard of, but sound like a good one as I love murder mysteries.
