MC Lyte

MC Lyte on Burnlounge: "It puts me and my fans in charge."

MC Lyte, with her gravelly voice and signature hard-edged style, came to BurnLounge before her latest album, Back 2 Lyte, hit stores on June 9th. To assist her in spreading the word through her BurnLounge, she has put together a a team of retailers consisting of Shawn Stockman (of Boyz II Men), Angie Stone, Mekhi Phifer (of E.R. and 8 Mile), NBA star Derrick Coleman, Yo-Yo, and actor Wood Harris (of HBO's The Wire). Not stopping there, through contact with John Monopoly she was even able to enlist Kanye West and Wendy Williams to join up with BurnLounge.

Together, this team hopes to spread the music that they love to the widest possible audience.

"BurnLounge has given me a platform to showcase my new music," Lyte says. "And this new project is the full hip-hop experience. We concentrated on just an authentic hip-hop sound; we weren't concerned with a club song, a radio song or any of that. We just did what felt good."

Not only was the two-time Grammy nominee the first female rap artist to receive a gold single, she was also the first rapper ever to perform at Carnegie Hall. Rather than letting the legend end there, Lyte went on to star in "Moesha", "For Your Love", and "The District", among various other TV series. She also lent her voice to commercials for Nike, McDonald's, and Coca-Cola, recently she became the first rapper to tour with the USO. But of course, her passion is hip-hop. But she's not entirely thrilled with what she sees.

Lyte describes today's scene as largely dominated by marketing, not originality.

"It's up to hip-hop lovers, radio and video shows to support the MCs trying to make a difference," Lyte says. "There are lots of artists who care and create with a sense of purpose. Most hip-hop that's being promoted is not that."

Lyte admits that she loves the music and the business, but she "just wishes the lyrics could be a little more thought-provoking."

Lyte continues: "I believe in balance: right now, hip-hop is a little too one-sided with negative lyrics and not enough inspiration. It's disheartening, the way women are portrayed in hip-hop culture. As much as women have done for the game - just life in general, it would seem like we should get way more respect. MCs that love and respect women in their lyrics should be celebrated more.

After two decades as a successful rapper, MC Lyte definitely understands what works in the music industry better than most.
