Burscough Car Boot Sale

Ranked #452 in Travel & Places, #20,451 overall

Burscough car boot sale is a huge flea market lying half way between Burscough and Rufford village by the side of the A59. And when I say huge I mean HUGE!

Most Sundays you will find it is packed with traders, amateur car booters and serious de-clutterers looking to sell their gear to thousands of eager buyers from the crack of dawn until around lunchtime.

But whether you are looking to buy or sell you are advised to get there early as it will take you hours just to walk round the place.

Amateur Car Booters

Burscough car boot is very popular with amateur car booters simply looking to shift some of the unwanted junk. The fee is only £10 for a car and with many thousands of eager buyers you will soon earn your money back.

As with any car boot sale it pays to prepare in advance. You will always get more money for goods that are clean so if you have the time, run a cloth over anything that looks grubby or dirty. Placing clothes on racks will help to attract the browsers as well as keeping the goods off the floor. And remember, a welcoming smile costs nothing!

Refreshments

After a hard morning bargain hunting you will probably need to refuel! And on Burscough car boot there is no shortage of refreshment stands offering everything from hot dogs and burgers to a cooling ice cream. The stands I checked out (purely for research purposes!) seemed clean and the queues appeared to move pretty fast.

Traders

All car boots seem to have a large number of professional traders and Burscough is no exception. The mobile butcher keeps up a continuous stream of lighthearted chat with potential customers and can be heard across the site thanks to his PA system. Even so, I'm sure he must be hoarse for the rest of the week as he also sells at the Banks carboot near Southport each Saturday!.

Around the carboot you will also find no shortage of small businesses selling everything from garden tools and hardware right through to furniture dealers displaying a range of suites, dining tables and double beds.

Car Boot Facilities

Facilities on site are basic but adequate. At times I saw quite large queues forming but they seemed to be moving quite quickly.

My personal advice is to join the queue as soon as you feel the need as you don't want to be caught out, and just as important, the facilities are at their 'freshest' early on in the day. Hot summer sun and heavy use are not a good mix!

Location

In April, May & June you will find the market on The Showground, Pippin Street, Burscough L40 7SP which is a flat grass site so drainage isn't too much of a problem.

From July to the end of September Burscough car boot occupies the White Dial Farm, Moss Lane, Burscough L40 4AT, half way between the villages of Burscough and Rufford alongside the A59. Access to the site is good and there is plenty of parking space in the adjoining fields. Admission costs £2 per car.

From October to the following April the market moves to the drier, and more solid disused Burscough Airfield, Tollgate Road, Burscough L40 7TG. Which means that the market runs for much of the year with just a short break during the worst of the weather.

So head on down to Burscough car boot and grab yourself a bargain!
