Time for a Change on 01.20.09 George W. Bush's Last Day in Office
We've started the Final Countdown to the last day that George W. Bush is in office, January 20, 2009. You can watch the Countdown clock on this lens, tick off the days, hours, minutes and seconds.
The Final Countdown lens was inspired by my husband who saw the 2008 George W. Bush Out of Office Countdown Wall Calendar. I thought I would create a Countdown lens to mark the time until there is a positive change on January 20, 2009. I included a Toast to Change.
Also included are a few modules that allow you to share your thoughts and participate in a few interesting opinion polls...What is your favorite description of Bush's Last Day? What is the best song to describe 01-20-09? and Who do you think will be the person providing the change?

Time for a Change
In November 2004 I was one of the 59,439,413 who voted for change and did NOT vote for George W. Bush. (This is the total who voted for Kerry and Nadar.)
In November 2008 we will be seeing a change. It's about time. Let's make sure that the change is a positive one.

There is no difference between the D party and the R party and at the rate things are going we may shift the chairs on the Titanic, but it's going down. We will no doubt be glad GB is gone, but his replacement will be no better in the long run. That is my fear!

End of an Error
LeslieBrenner says:
I'm also counting the days until the end of Bush's many errors. What worries me is how many more errors he can make between now and then. [Shiver.]

There is an enormous difference between the two parties. Other than all of the Republican candidates favoring the war in Iraq with the exception of Ron Paul, the economy can no longer stand the corporate welfare state that Bush has established. He has taken a surplus and turned it into the biggest deficit in history. He has outsourced high paying jobs and given not even lip service to healthcare, education, the environment, etc. This is our last chance to save this country and get it back on track, both domestically and internationally. Obama is the answer.

End of an error, for sure! I just hope the next one will be better

I agree that it's hard to trust *any* politician, but I disagree that there's no diff between the parties. That's a dangerous stance to take; it might encourage not voting at all! I think John Edwards would actually make a difference. But even if the winner is as centrist as Hillary Clinton, it'll be a *good thing* to change course from Republican to Democratic.

Candidates Winning the Election With Less than 50% of the Total Votes
Fifteen candidates (three of them twice for a total of seventeen times) have become president of the United States with a popular vote less than 50% of the total cast. These presidents include:
- 1824 John Q. Adams
1844 James K. Polk (D)
1848 Zachary Taylor (W)
1856 James Buchanan (D)
1860 Abraham Lincoln (R)
1876 Rutherford B. Hayes (R)
1880 James A. Garfield (R)
1884 Grover Cleveland (D)
1888 Benjamin Harrison (R)
1892 Grover Cleveland (D)
1912 Woodrow Wilson (D)
1916 Woodrow Wilson (D)
1948 Harry S. Truman (D)
1960 John F. Kennedy (D)
1968 Richard M. Nixon (R)
1992 William J. Clinton (D)
1996 William J. Clinton (D)
2000 George W. Bush (R)
Candidates Winning the Popular Vote, but Not the Electoral Votes
In addition to Jackson in 1824, there have only been three other candidates who received the largest popular vote yet failed to gain a majority in the electoral college. These were Samuel J. Tilden (D) in 1876, Grover Cleveland (D) in 1888, and Al Gore (D) in 2000.

A Toast to Change
- It is change, continuing change, inevitable change, that is the dominant factor in society today.
No sensible decision can be made any longer without taking into account not only the world as it is,
but the world as it will be...
- I am ready for an end to the current administration, I think we are all ready for a positive change in the right direction, regardless of party, regardless of personality.
So here's a toast to the inevitable, continuing change. Let's hope that whatever form the change may take, the future--the world as it will become--is a much more positive one.- Then fill the bowl, away with care,
Our joy shall always last,
Our hopes shall brighten days to come,
And memory guild the past.

Oh the Times They are a Changin' for People
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

The Times They Are a Changin' on YouTube
- We sing this song as a call to action as we did many many years ago as a way of saying "We can make the world a better place."
Young people must take up the standard now. We will join them. But you must make a difference. Justice is not out of date.
The times must be a changin' once again.

Times They are a Changin' for Writers & Critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.
