Usually people say that marketing is just another name for 'advertising' or 'selling' and it certainly comes in many varieties. In fact Cova Badot and Bucci reckon that there are at least 72 varieties of 'marketing' that have been created since 1985 including such exotic things as:

multi-sensory marketing, neural marketing, empowerment marketing, tribal marketing, symbiotic , marketing and old favourites like guerilla marketing, viral marketing, service marketing and relationship marketing.

Confusingly for the layperson the word Marketing refers to two distinct things. Firstly it is a business attitude or mindset that keeps track of the business environment, understands customers and pays attention to competitive activity.  This is known as 'The Marketing Concept' or the 'Marketing Philosophy'. The gist of the philosophy is that you don't do anything in business unless you understand customer needs first and what competitive alternatives your customers have. Secondly its a business function that creates and actions driven by a plan for Competitive Strategy by managing the so called marketing mix, brand management, service and relationship marketing, innovation and communictions.

Like any profession it comes with its own jargon, ideas, thought leaders and tools and techniques. So...
