A brief history of star and cross tattoos

Not long ago I attended a lecture at our local college where a visiting professor shared from his thesis on religious symbols and their history. While I was hoping to be in for a Da Vinci Code type of experience, I was drawn in by personal use of symbols. Tattoos have long been a tool for communicating a wide spectrum of messages to the wearer as well as the onlooker.

Apparently, for as long as there has been organized religions, many of the highest priest and governing officials have seen fit to emblazon themselves with appropriate symbols. Cross tattoos were a part of many Christian priests facade. In fact, when some missionaries set out across the continent of Africa, they came across heavily tattooed cultures. It was a logical step to see these people adding religious symbols to their body modifications.

Star tattoos, on the other hand have had ominous meanings, and have tended to be used by practittioners of dark spiritual beliefs. While I'm not sure what I would do if I can face to face with a deep, red and black pentagram, I am comfortable with allowing folks to do as they will. If you want a star tattooed on your body, or a cross, I say go for it!

Shooting a Film in Fiji

I'm a movie producer. I run a company in Australia with two partners. We've produced some notable films over the past 20 years, and one of our next projects is based on a popular novel and involves some scenes in Fiji. Since we keep a close eye on production budgets, we're happy these are scenes that don't involve the whole cast and crew or very much time; just the same, they are important scenes and we're going to film them at a Fiji hotel. We won't have to build any fancy sets and the scenery comes with the place! I've been lucky enough to travel to Fiji in the past and know what the place offers.

We've worked out a deal with the hotel for food service, plus they have great amenities, so we won't have to hire outside contractors. Plus we're going to include the hotel in the credits, so that helped with the negotiations. Branding is a big part of films these days.

We've signed the cast already and we're rounding up the crew. Shooting starts next month. We'll be able to film inside some of guest accommodations at the hotel. They've got some fabulous setting ready-made for us.

Ladies Take Safety Precautions

When are we most vulnerable? As a woman, what steps do you take to ensure your safety? Do you jog or walk alone? Do you live by yourself? Do you leave restaurants or bars alone at night? Crimes against women make headlines regularly and we are shocked by the violence exhibited against women. In an effort to remain safe, we must take steps to ensure our own safety and protect ourselves from a variety of threats, both known and unknown.

If you live alone, install ADT security systems and feel more at ease due to its direct connection to a 24 hour a day monitoring center. The system is also a means of contacting police, fire and rescue in the event of an emergency. Installing a home security system is easy and well worth the initial cost.

Other safety precautions like going out with a buddy or using a cab to drive you home instead of walking seems like easy solutions. A lady should always carry a noise maker or pepper spray to help fight of potential attackers, especially if going out alone or walking to the car. The most important thing to remember about safety is making good decisions and being aware of your surroundings.

Books For Sale

I am in the middle of a cross country move and I have loads of books I simply need to get rid of. I tried selling them on craigslist for a reasonable price but they didn't sell. Now time has run out and I need to get rid of them ASAP. I am willing to let the lot go for a bulk price so just make an offer and I'll tell you if I accept. A lot of the books revolve around Dreamweaver website design and interactive training. I studied computer graphics in college so most of my classes had to do with web page software. As you probably know, these books don't sell for cheap in stores so this is really a great offer.

Even if you yourself don't take CSS training classes, perhaps you can sell them off to other students you know who are in need of books like these. The other things on my quick sell list include a bunch of kitchenware that I simply can't take with me. I have a coffee maker, a blender and a wooden block of really good cutting knives. Because I am so desperate to get rid of these items, I will throw them in with the sale of the books as a bonus. Please get back to me ASAP, thanks!

Wireless is the Best

No more being behind the times!

I absolutely love my high speed internet service. I'm not sure what I would do without it. I have been able to research everything for my dissertation. I have been able to watch movies online, and I've been able to host a mini file server. When I finally got wireless internet service, I felt like I was finally able to break free from the bonds of the consistently tethered electronic world. I was able to enjoy my morning coffee out on the front patio in California while talking to my friends in Europe.

I was able to rent the latest Netflix movie, or send an email. I was so happy when I finally got wireless, I didn't quite know what to do. It really felt like a whole new world had opened up to me, and I was able to jump with joy in all the glory of the latest technological feat. Then one of my buddies came over. It old her about my amazing setup, and she proceeded to tell me that wireless wasn't that new, and that I could have gotten it ten years ago. I was always a bit behind the times, but at least I have it now.

A New Job in Interactive Marketing

My boyfriend was laid off from his job a few months ago and has been searching for work ever since. He previously worked as a web designer and was trying to find either freelance work or an in-house position doing graphic design for websites. He finally got hired last week at a new company but the work that he's doing is a little bit different than what he had expected.

Instead of getting hired with a Tampa website design company, he managed to secure a new position with a Tampa interactive marketing agency. This is a business in Tampa that does web design but it also provides a number of other services to its clients. From what I understand, it takes clients' websites one step further by working on serious web development and creative marketing for those websites.

Although he was wary about the new work at first, my boyfriend seems really excited about all that he'll be able to learn in this new position. He feels like he'll really gain a better understanding of how to promote the websites that he designs which is something that he wasn't learning at his old web design job. Even though he's still doing website design, he's able to expand his own skills in this new position. Hopefully this will also help him to improve the services he can offer to freelance clients so that this job can really take him somewhere! Who knew getting laid off could end up being such a good thing?

Being the Best

It worked for me!

I am always looking for ways to enhance my SEO optimization so that I can have maximum success with my website. Of course to have success with a website on the world wide web, you have to have people who come to your website and you want to be able to draw as many people as possible. The more people you can draw to your site, the more money you can make, and the more money you have to spend on fun things like flashy cars, nice clothes, and in my case, a thousand DVDs for my DVD collection. My goal is to have a DVD collection of ten thousand DVDs. I know it sounds crazy. But I am well on my way, believe it or not.

Anyway to make the most of your SEOs and to draw the most amount of customers that you possibly can to come and visit your website, it is often of great value to employ a search engine optimization company. That is what I did and they really helped my site take off from where it had been for a really long time. It worked for me and it has worked for some of my friends too, so I am glad I did it.

Heating bills are unbelievable

I have a tiny one bedroom apartment.  It's not very big, and it's cold all the time, unless I'm cooking and it boils (no pun intended).  It has these ineffectual little heaters and its freezing.  So now I get my bills for the place, and the heating bill is 100 dollars a month.  How can that possibly be?  I've never been colder in my entire life.  I get a ton of sun exposure during the day, but apparently not enough to actually heat the place, so I've got an idea.  I'm going to set up home solar systems that use solar power systems to harness the heat of the sun.  I found a company that's part of the California solar initiative and recently had a record breaking month because of their low costs.  I think this could be a really awesome alternative to the absolutely insane heating bills I'm currently paying.  I mean, just think if I ever got laid off!  I'd be in such deep trouble with these kinds of bills.  That's just the heat, it doesn't include internet, electricity, cell phone, car payments%u2026I think I already am in deep trouble!  Here's hoping I don't lose my job, right?

Choosing Temporary Fencing for your Business

There comes a time in the life of many businesses when it becomes necessary to do construction. If you are able to stay open for business during that construction, you should do so in order to avoid loss of profits. However, you will need to know that staying open requires taking many precautions to keep your customers safe during the construction. You also need to think about ways to keep the customers as happy as possible in spite of the disruption.

One key tool that businesses often use for safety during construction is the use of temporary fencing to keep customers out of areas where it is not safe for them to be. It is important to make sure that the temporary fence that you use is sturdy enough to truly keep customers safe and yet not so aesthetically unpleasant that customers are deterred from coming into your business.

There are many different options for temporary fencing. You may need something as thick as a jersey barrier if your construction is elaborate. Simpler construction could allow you to use a more elegant crowd control solution such as the post & rope that you typically see in places like movie theatres. The goal is to balance safety with a decent appearance so that you can maximize customer satisfaction during the construction at your place of business.

Opening a New Warehouse

My recent promotion put me in charge of a new warehouse on the west side Phoenix. Though our company was expanding, it did not have everything in the way of money to make this place state-of-the-art.  Part of my duties to get it open was to find good, used equipment to run it.  Since we have to move palletized loads around all day, I had to find some used fork lifts to do the job.

I didn't have much luck looking here in town, so I did a quick search for California forklift.  Lucky me, I came up with a number of them less than half a day from Phoenix. I needed four of them, and two of those had to be for heavy loads.

We had a truck making an LTL run to Riverside, so I caught a ride.  Since he was going to have to dead-head it back, I thought we could save some money here.  The driver dropped me off at the location that had the forklifts.  After about three hours, I was able to contract on all four that I needed.  The next morning, we had them loaded on the truck, and we were on our way.

I Cannot Believe That Timeshares Are Still Popular

Really?  People still do this?  I admit it's a lot cheaper than owning an extra home, but the whole process seems so limiting.  I mean, if I want to stay somewhere besides a hotel-say, a Florida villa or something-there are other options besides the same old timeshare year after year.  I know I'm knocking the timeshare king of all places, but really, villas in Florida are plentiful!

My sister had a timeshare in Breckenridge, Colorado.  A lovely place. And the type of place you wouldn't want to necessarily stay for tons of days in a row.  Maybe just a few days to ski once a year.  Well, her time was in summer, which was good because we don't ski.  But it was always a crowded week up there.  Some huge bicycle race or something.  And actually, the place was kind of dumpy.  I mean, you pay month after month, plus a yearly fee, and they're next to impossible to sell.  And what if I wanted to spend that week somewhere else in the mountains?  I mean, there isn't that much to see in the small town of Breckenridge, as pretty as it is.  I just don't see the attraction in timeshares.

Appalachia Trip

Every year one of the teachers at my high school spearheads a trip for a few seniors to one of the more depressed areas of eastern Kentucky. This year, my senior year, I decided to go. Several months before the trip, we had a toy drive. We are not a big huge school, but we did manage to fill a couple of covered utility trailers full of toys. Then a week before Christmas, we set out on the road trip from western Indiana. It took us two fairly long days of driving through some wild weather to get there, but we did finally make it with the toys in tow.

We had arranged the drop off with a local church, and they were really happy to see us when we arrived. It was such a backwards community though. I stepped across the street to get a soda at what looked like a bait shop. I was actually really surprised when instead of having a cigar box or an antique cash register, the toothless cashier pulled out a laser wireless barcode scanner! I guess I just wasn't expecting to see the same kind of retail point of sale software being used that we have at home in this community that looked like it was stuck in the 1940s.

Are My Prices too High?

Comparing profit to volume

I have been operating my business now for approximately two years and it has been extremely successful.  However, I began to realize my profit was not in balance with the amount of business I was doing because my prices were set too low in comparison to my competitors.  Therefore, in the last couple of months I have increased my prices to match my opponents.

Unfortunately, I began to see an immediate drop in sales.  Now I am not sure whether I am charging too much for the product or if there is some other variable I am unaware of.  Therefore, to answer my questions I teamed up with a company who facilitate customer satisfaction surveys as well as employee satisfaction surveys, and I was surprised at what the feedback exposed.  When I increased my prices I also made some enhancements to my web-site and it appears my customers found the navigation of my site more complicated then before.

It was interesting that something as simple as a customer survey saved me from inaccurately re-pricing my products and ignoring the real problem.  I am confident that re-evaluating my web-site will bring my revenue back up and balance out my profit margin.

Collecting and Protecting 1950s Dolls

I have been collecting 1950s dolls for about seven years, since 2001, roughly.  My decision to collect dolls was triggered by my mom finding an old doll at Goodwill, which I set out to identify and redress appropriately; however, I think my passion for 1950s dolls has more to do with memories of playing with my mom's childhood dolls as a kid, than anything else.

Over my years of collecting, I have learned certain things -- but nothing more important than the need to protect dolls from open air and direct sunlight.  Open air can lead to dust, dirt, and discoloration of a doll's clothing, hair, and flesh tone.  Sunlight is the worst, though, and causes dolls' clothing, hair, and faces to fade irreversibly.  This can all happen much more quickly than you might think, as I inadvertently found out once.

I display my dolls in my dolls in my living room; however, where to put my display cases was a big deal, because our house has a lot of natural light.  In the living room there are two large double hung windows that let in a lot of sunlight, so I had to be careful to position the cases where their precious contents would not be exposed to direct sunlight.  Thank goodness we don't have any picture windows in our living room, or I would have found that impossible to do!

Another solution, if you don't want to have to worry about keeping a room darkened or positioning your dolls so they are out of direct sunlight, is to replace your windows.  Many modern windows such as Anderson windows actually block UV rays, which is the part of sunlight that causes fading and damage to your dolls.  You can even find doll cabinets with UV-resistant glass in them!  The attitude among serious doll collectors seems to be that nothing is too good (or too expensive!) for our dolls!

Robotic Mental Work

Even though most people would say that "artificial intelligence" has not yet been created, computers and robotics are already raising many interesting philosophical and ethical questions.  One persistent issue arises when a robot replaces a human job.  Actually, this phenomenon has in some sense been happening since before recorded history.  Every time a tool or technique makes a job more efficient, human labor is displaced.  In the long run, displaced laborers find other work to do and everyone benefits with more product and less toil, but in the short term, lost jobs can cause real hardship.  Robotic parts on assembly lines are an obvious example, but computers are making an even bigger impact.  The online shopping cart is a prime example.  Shopping cart software handles online retail transactions.  It displays pictures and descriptions of products, allows shoppers to browse, takes their money, and processes the orders, preparing for shipping.  Dotnetnuke shopping cart is a popular example of this kind of software.  Of course, humans have to set the website up and maintain it, but a single or a few people replace countless cashiers and all the people who maintain brick and mortar stores.  As in other cases, I think in the long run this change is good for humanity.

Expect More

As a new travel agent, I was tasked with learning more about hotels and bed and breakfast places across the country.  A cookie-cutter hotel has nothing on a quality New England bed and breakfast. B&Bs offer you so much more than your everyday high-rise hotels. Once you stay in a bed and breakfast you will come to expect only the best when you vacation.

At a chain hotel, you are lucky if you ever see the manager, much less personally speak with him or her. But inside Connecticut inns, the innkeepers and staff members make themselves readily available to you for questions, advice about the area, and for special requests. And speaking of special requests, upscale bed and breakfasts welcome them.

Unlike a hotel's impersonal, hit-or-miss restaurant, classy bed and breakfasts provide home-cooked morning meals catered to your individual tastes. Just let the innkeeper know ahead of time what your dietary restrictions are, and he or she will be happy to customize your menu.

Expect only the best at Rhode Island inns, as well. Fresh-cut flowers, chocolate on your pillows, a bottle of wine, extra towels, freshly washed robes and/or other personal-touch amenities will await you in your room.

Once you visit a bed and breakfast in New England, you will never again want to stay in a typical hotel again. It surely opened my eyes; I'll be sure to tell my clients about these B&Bs!

Upgrading Your Worker's Skills For Free

Did you know that some products being sold come with the benefit of an actual user's training?  It would be good to know about bundled benefits so as to save on training cost and ensure personnel productivity.

In the area of mass manufacturing, many companies selling large screw machines offer training for use of the machines. Even if the training is totally free, the quality of lessons is very good.  Consider the fact that the trainers themselves are from the makers themselves.

Many of these machines can be complicated to use and demand special hands on training to optimize the performance of both machine and the operator.  Multispindle machines for instance can be tricky because the operator will have to simultaneous watch the work of several spindles working on a product.

A screw machine training can be expensive when taken in a private vocational school.  One has to pay for teachers fee and laboratory use.  In addition, the student will also have to provide for his own material.

My advice to companies who are considering purchasing big machines for production is that they thoroughly query the seller.  There are more benefits and perks that come out when one negotiates well.  And this can mean a significant amount of money saved.

Link Building Does Not Mean a Job Making Jewelry

I think I'm pretty bright when it comes to all the new internet trends out there.  Some are fads, others are here to stay.  So I'm doing my usual industry reading and notice that in Tampa link building is really helping a lot of the local companies according to our local papers.  I'm stumped by this because I don't see how jewelry making can help a local bakery, so I decide to poke around and learn more.  Come to find out "link building" actually has nothing to do with making necklaces at all.  As a matter of fact, Tampa and Orlando search engine optimization is big business and vital to the success of companies not only here in the state, but all over the country. Since I've been around awhile, I'm somewhat familiar with the SEO Tampa companies have been doing, but I never knew link building was such a big part.  Appears that one of the best ways to get your website noticed by the search engines is to have quality links that point back to your website, and there are some great companies out there that will do it for you.  So now my new venture is learning all about this and see how I can incorporate it into my business.  Better start reading!

Dirt and Gravel Screening - Many Locations, One Machine

Pit and quarry businesses have always been in demand since the advent of housing construction, paved highways, pedestrian sidewalks, bridges, walls, playgrounds, and the thousands of other uses that ubiquitous concrete is needed. A variety of uses for rock demands a variety of types of material, which requires a diverse selection of sites to choose from.

As a quarry worker, contractor, or manager of such an operation, the ability to move from site to site and still utilize the same machinery saves time, investment, money, and labor. The ease of mobility of moving the Dirt Screeners and Gravel Screeners used in an operation from place to place is of the essence. By not having to invest in multiple machines to service the different sites, much money is saved and the outset purchase price of the Gravel Screening Machine becomes a long-term investment, of which is easy to recognize the value.

These topsoil screening machines are built tough to last long and work hard, screening out the materials you don't want from the ones that you do. The leftovers are sectioned out in a way that makes other-use application possible, or even recycling of the materials possible. All in all, portable screeners are resources for anyone involved in the business to seriously consider if they are serious about their marketability, mobility, and profitability.

Tips for Choosing a Business Partner

You decide that you want to go into business but you don't want to do it all on your own. A business partner seems like the ideal solution. Unfortunately, many business partnerships quickly fail. This is usually because of mistakes made when choosing a partner.

Here are some tips that I would follow when choosing a new business partner:

  • Find someone that you really like and respect. That has to be the cornerstone of the partnership.

  • Look for someone whose strengths are your weaknesses. If you are trying to make a profit off of real property but you don't understand cost seg engineering then get a partner who is a whiz with the net present value calculator that you don't even know how to use!

  • Choose someone whose commitment level equals their involvement. It doesn't have to be a 50/50 split but if it is then the person should be as committed to the work as you are.

  • Make sure that you can communicate well. The rest can be resolved if you can talk to each other.

Ultimately, you want to choose a business partner who is similar enough to you that you'll get along but different enough from you that you challenge one another.
