Hiring a professional

If you're serious about making your business a success, then one of the best ways to invest in your business is with a professional website, look, and logo.

If you get your nephew, friend or local student to knock up a cheap website for you then that is exactly the impression prospective customers will get when they arrive at your website - cheap. And if you cut corners on how your business appears, they'll wonder where else you cut corners on your products or services.

What is web design?

From Wikipedia:

Web design is the process of planning and creating a website. Text, images, digital media and interactive elements are shaped by the web designer to produce the page seen on the web browser. Web designers utilize markup language, most notably HTML for structure and CSS for presentation to develop pages that can be read by web browsers.

As a whole, the process of web design includes conceptualization, planning, producing, post-production, research, advertising as well as media control that is applied to the pages within the site by the designer or group of designers with a specific purpose. The site itself can be divided into its main page, also known as the home page, which cites the main objective as well as highlights of the site's daily updates; which also contains hyperlinks that functions to direct viewers to a designated page within the site's domain.

What is graphic design?

From Wikipedia:

Graphic design is a creative process — most often involving a client and a designer and usually completed in conjunction with producers of form (i.e., printers, programmers, signmakers, etc.) — undertaken in order to convey a specific message (or messages) to a targeted audience. The term "graphic design" can also refer to a number of artistic and professional disciplines that focus on visual communication and presentation. The field as a whole is also often referred to as Visual Communication or Communication Design. Various methods are used to create and combine words, symbols, and images to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may use typography, visual arts and page layout techniques to produce the final result. Graphic design often refers to both the process (designing) by which the communication is created and the products (designs) which are generated.

Common uses of graphic design include identity (logos and branding), web sites, publications (magazines, newspapers, and books), advertisements and product packaging. For example, a product package might include a logo or other artwork, organized text and pure design elements such as shapes and color which unify the piece. Composition is one of the most important features of graphic design, especially when using pre-existing materials or diverse elements.

What is logo design?

From Wikipedia:

A logo is a graphic mark or emblem commonly used by commercial enterprises, organizations and even individuals to aid and promote instant public recognition. Logos are either purely graphic (symbols/icons) or are composed of the name of the organization (a logotype or wordmark).

In the days of hot metal typesetting, a logotype was a uniquely set and arranged typeface or colophon. At the level of mass communication and in common usage a company's logo is today often synonymous with its trademark or brand.

DIY Resources

OK, so perhaps you're on a very tight budget - many businesses are, especially if they're a startup.

If you're willing to get your hands dirty, and you have plenty of time to spare, then you'll be able to put together a website yourself. A basic website is fairly straightforward to get going - and depending on what your business does, you may not even need to build a website at all: for example, if you craft jewellery or goods, then setting up a store with one of the below merchant stores can be all you need to sell online.

Please note: Do-it-yourself websites have a lot of flaws. Unless you've spent many years studying and training with website design, you simply won't know or understand the intricacies behind design - why things go in certain places, why things are or aren't used, designing for different experiences (someone on a pc vs someone on their smartphone, for instance), and so on. While having a simple DIY website can do for the short term, you'll notice a significant improvement once you're able to invest the money in hiring a professional designer or design studio to built a strong, attractive website for you.
