Tax Deductions For a Home-Based Business

Congress specifically designed the tax laws favorable to home based businesses so that anyone could start a home business as a second source of income and this would be a second source of income that a household could fall back on when the economy caused them to lose their J.O.B. The additional income would allow any household to weather a down turn in the economy.

Most people including tax consultants do not know about these laws because when these laws were passed the government did not advertise to the public that these laws were being passed. If your tax consultant will not work with you it is time to get someone that will.

Anyone can qualify for these deductions if they are actively working their business with the intent to profit on a regular and consistent basis.

Knowing what to do to meet the above is important if you want to qualify for these deductions. If you have a traditional business you are working all the time this is not a problem, but for the part timer doing a home business this needs to be spelled out.

Interestingly the total time is not as important as the consistent and regular basis. For instance if you work a half hour per day on your business 5 or more days a week would qualify you for the deduction.

Deducting Expenses that you are already incurring

One of the important advantages of even bothering with a home based business is to be treated differently when it comes to taxes. If you do not have a home based business you should look into having one because of the possibility of deducting the following expenses that you incur anyway.

If you are an apartment dweller with no home to deduct you definitely need to look into a home business. Even with a home to deduct why not put more of your hard earned money into your hands rather than the government and in the long run when your business does become more successful you will be paying more taxes anyway.

Understand that when you pay taxes you have to make say $130 to $150 to pay a $100 bill. If you have the business you only have to have $100 to pay a $100 bill.

Of course you should not go into business just for the deductions but it is these deductions that could make of break you and cause you to succeed or fail in your business. These deductions of course will increase your cash flow and will allow more money to be available to run the business.
  • Commuting as a business expense - There are approximately 230 commuting days in a year. Say you commute 20 miles each way times 230 or about $4600 and if there are 2 cars, well you get the picture. So you can see the importance of learning how to qualify for this deduction.
  • Medical expenses not paid by insurance - This could be important if you have a lot of medical expenses but even the copays, over the counter drugs and nutritional products will add up.
  • Children Expenses - This could include cloths and school supplies and depending if you have a lot of children this one could be huge.
  • Product purchases as a business expense - this one is a business expense if you are required to purchase the product on a monthly basis to meet business requirements to make commissions.

Understanding The tax Law for the Home Based Business

The trick is to understand that the tax laws that were passed in the early 90's were truly passed to help people with home based businesses.

The difficulty that most people have is finding the reference code to give to your tax account or CPA so that they will stand behind you when you do your taxes.

Just knowing what is available and what most people starting a home based business do not know but certainly could use that extra money to keep going when they are not making much money.

In my present home based business I teach these business deductions with the reference code to my business partners. In my business I have a 30 day trial period where the new partner can learn and earn at the same time.Click Here
