The Truth is, an entire industry has grown around online affiliate marketing since the mid-1900's and it is getting bigger all the time.

Conventions are relularly held and attended by thousands of people and there's even an offline magazine devoted entirely to the subject of affiliate marketing.

Entire affiliate networks such as Renegade Marketing, MarketingMerge.com, SFI Affiliate - EyeEarner.com, Commission Junction, Linkshare, Squidoo, DoubleClick, exist for the purpose of bringing merchants and affiliates together.

According to one report, total sales generated through affiliate networks in 2006, was 2.16 billion pounds in the UK alone. Marketing Sherpa's research team estimated that in 2006, affiliates worldwide earned $6.5 billion in bounty and commissions from a variety of sources in retail, personal finance, gaming and gambling, travel, telecom, education, publishing and forms of lead generation other than contextual ad networks such as Google Adsense.

In a nutshell, affiliate marketing is an arrangement between an online merchant and affiliate(you), in which the affiliate earns a commission for generating sales, leads and/or clicks for the merchant's web site.

For example, many credit card companies will pay you between $5.00 and $20.00 in commission for each visitor that you send to their site who completes credit card applications, and up to $55.00 or more for those whose applications are approved.

That's a great commission, and although many companies pay less, there are those that pay much more.
