OK I admit it: My cats are my children.

This lens is all about two cats who have charmed themselves into my life and graciously accepted my invitation to take up residence in my home. There's Scout the Tiny Tortie (who got here first and has managed to remain Alpha) and Buster the Eternal Kitten Tuxedo (who is actually a 17-pound 3-year-old). Here you'll find lots of photos of "my kids" and maybe some doting-human stories. And a few kitty niceties you might like to buy. (I, Kate the Human Caretaker, am talking all fancy because Scout dictated this to me, and this is how she would talk if she felt like talking, which she doesn't.)

I Love

An extremely rare moment of intimacy

Scout hates this picture

Scout (who lived with my husband and me for 6 years before Buster moved in) would rather she still had free reign in the house and wished Buster were a million miles away. Except occasionally he's fun to play with (hissing and growling all the while), when he's not pouncing on her, barring her way to the garage, her private domain, and generally making her kitty life miserable. Grr.

Buster as Kitten

Buster, now 3, has never lost this expression.

My husband and a neighbor found him and his littermates in a little bundle, asleep in some grass in the neighbor's backyard. Larry, the husband, told me he had a surprise, I went eagerly, saw a box, and immediately knew it was kittens. How did I know? I don't know. I chose Buster because he looked like the runt of the litter. "He needs me!" I said. Ha! Not exactly a runt, Buster.

No Bigger Than a Breadbox

Scout is my Beauty. At a point when my husband and I thought we'd never be able to move out of our apartment and into a house, I decided to rebel against the landlord's no-pet rule and went to the local Humane Society shelter. I had her name all picked out: Scout, after Scout Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird." I entered the cats area, turned right to go down the long aisle of kitties in cages, and there she was, at the end of the row, looking at me. That was that. She was six weeks old.

Buster Laid Back

The Cat Who Thinks He's an Otter

This is Buster's all-time favorite position, for dozing or just watching the world go by.

What a Face!

Did I mention Scout was beautiful? Yes, I believe I did. Well, she's also very smart, and of course, Princess of the Feisty Kitties. Here she is wishing Larry and his camera would leave her alone.

Adorable Things My Cats Do

Hilarious, priceless, scrumptious, intelligent!

Teeny Tiny Buster

I love Buster's baby pictures

When we adopted Buster, he was about 1 month old. His eyes were still foggy. I took a week off work to be with him, and fed him with an eye dropper. This is Baby Buster asleep after a meal (his favorite thing). It's hard to believe he was ever this small.

Hi there, Big Boy

Larry's constant computer companion

I often hear loud cursing coming from Larry's office. Every time he even looks like he's going up there, Scout is ahead of him, running up the steps. Then, as soon as he sits down at his computer, she is all over the keyboard, in front of it, over it, around it, purring and rubbing (and depositing lots of cat hair). He finally has to sit back and let her have her fun before he starts to work.

Buster in a Contemplative Mood

He's a deep thinker

Often I'll catch Buster just staring into space---ahem, I mean, contemplating the complexity of the kitty universe.

Cat Toys We Have Known and Loved

Buster and Scout are very persnickety when it comes to cat toys. Honestly, Scout's favorite toy is my fingers drumming the side of her window perch. And Buster always comes back to a knotted up plastic shopping bag (with which he plays Fetch). However, occasionally, an actual store-bought cat toy floats to the top of their overflowing toy basket.

Oh my goodness!

Ms. Hayes, I'm ready for my closeup now.

Most of the time Scout would rather not have her picture taken. Sometimes, though, she deigns to allow it. And am I glad when she does. I call this her "glam shot."

Cat Haiku

Will the author of these stellar poems please stand up?

The food in my bowl
is old, and more to the point
contains no tuna.
----
So you want to play.
Will I claw at dancing string?
Your ankle's closer.
----
There's no dignity
in being sick - which is why
I don't tell you where.
----
Seeking solitude
I am locked in the closet.
For once I need you.
----
Tiny can, dumped in
plastic bowl. Presentation,
One star; service: none.
----
Am I in your way?
You seem to have it backwards:
This pillow's taken.
----
Your mouth is moving;
up and down, emitting noise.
I've lost interest.
----
The dog wags his tail,
seeking approval. See mine?
Different message.
----
My brain: walnut-sized.
Yours: largest among primates.
Yet, who leaves for work?
----
Most problems can be
ignored. The more difficult
ones can be slept through.
----
My affection is conditional.
Don't stand up,
it's your lap I love.
----
Cats can't steal the breath
of children. But if my tail's
pulled again, I'll learn.
----
I don't mind being
teased, any more than you mind
a skin graft or two.
----
So you call this thing
your "cat carrier." I call
these my "blades of death."

But Seriously, Folks...

Here's a catku by yours truly. (Inspired by Scout)

Aww! "The food in my bowl / is old, and more to the point / contains no tuna." love this--this is so the daily mantra of all 4 of my cats. Every time I open a can they come running...and are always so disappointed when it turns out just to be beans. Anyway, blah blah, enough about my cats--yours are adorable!
