The Beginning
I had followed a link from a blog and landed on Squidoo. I was looking for a means to promote my newly published author website and bird blog. At first I wasn't sure what to make of it.
I continued to click through one page after another. The skepticism finally gave way to cautious optimism. Squidoo? Could I make it work for me?
Maybe.
But then my cynical alter ego had to voice her opinion again.
It's a scam.
How can it be a scam? It doesn't cost anything?
Okay, but when it comes to the computer, you're hopelessly inept. It would be a waste of time to try.
Even a failed experiment has value as long as you learn something from it.
It will take time.
There's nothing worth watching on TV anyway.
They say it's addictive...
I ignored the warning and dove in.
My First Lens
Writing about what I was familiar made sense. I am a bird watcher. A lens on my favorite bird of prey seemed fitting. It took forever to build, but I was proud of it. After discovering the forum and the traffic it could generate, I was off and running. Before I knew it I had close to forty lenses. Most of them were of my favorite birds. I had lenses on birds of prey such as the California Condor and the Merlin Falcon.
I built lenses on my favorite backyard birds. As a bird watcher I couldn't help myself. Nor could I leave the shorebirds out. The Herring Gull may be a common sight, but the Brown Pelican is on the endangered list. People needed to know that.
My Favorite Birds of Prey

The Red-shouldered Hawk
-
Unlike most hawks, the Red-shouldered Hawk hunts from a low-lying perch. They sit quietly, waiting and watching, until prey wanders into their line of sight. Once spotted, the prey doesn't have a prayer. The Red-shouldered Hawk swoops down and gr...

The Osprey
-
The Osprey, often called the Sea Hawk, is a fish-eating bird of prey. Its eyesight is phenomenal. It can spot a fish lurking beneath the water even when it's hovering 130 feet above the water. Spotting its prey, it plunges into the water, feet fi...

I Love to Read
When I come across a good book, I want to share it with the world.
- Writing Book Reviews
- I love to read and I'm a writer. It stands to reason that I should be able to write a good book review. At least that's what I assumed when I sat down to write my first one. It was harder than I thought it would be.
- Spell of the Highlander
- For the last eleven hundred years Cian MacKeltar looked out at the world through a plate of silvered glass. He was caught in the dark mirror through magic and trickery by a man he once called friend. The only thing that kept the madness at bay was a thirst for vengeance.
- Deadlock
- Emily Hudson is a UN artifacts expert. In times of conflict, warring factions rarely consider preserving and protecting the country's historical treasures. It's Emily's job to go in and rescue them.
- FaeFever
- Faefever is the third book in Karen Marie Moning's Dark series. In Darkfever MacKayla Lane is pulled from a world isolated from the harsh realities of life. Her sister died a brutal death in a foreign city 4,000 miles from home. Dublin's Garda called it a random act of violence. After receiving a belated message from her sister, Mac knew better. She didn't know who murdered her sister, but she was determined to find out.
- The Carpathian Male: The Ultimate Romantic Hero
- The usual description of a leading man in a romance novel usually falls into one of two categories. They are either tall, dark, and handsome, or a blond haired, blue-eyed Adonis. There are variations to the theme. The hair color will change or he will have green eyes or even gray, but they all have broad, muscular shoulders and narrow hips.
- The Hardy Boys
- Like so many great things today, jazz, movies with soundtracks, the redefining of a woman's roll in society, art deco, and the Hardy Boys, all have their roots buried in the 1920's. I listen to jazz, refuse to wear a corset, love art deco, and I can't imagine being ten and not reading the Hardy Boys first book, The Tower Treasure.
The Past

Annie Oakley

In an era when opportunities for women were limited, Annie Oakley's amazing ability with a gun proved that a woman could do just as well (or even better) than a man, even in traditionally "masculine fields" like shooting. Through talen...

Christmas
Christmas is my favorite time of the year. It can be stressful, but I've always been busy so that doesn't bother me. But I know the stress gets to a lot of people and that takes some of the pleasure out of the season. After giving that some thought, I built the lens Using Lists to Lower Your Holiday Stress. I can't imagine maintaining my hectic schedule with my sanity in tack without my lists. With Christmas on my mind I built several lenses featuring holiday decorations. When you plan your Christmas shopping I hope you keep them in mind.
