Making Your Own Baby Food Is Not That Hard

If you have a baby you are doing everything you can do see that your baby is healthy and happy. That means providing the best for them. That should extend to the food they eat as well.

When your baby gets to be between the ages of four and six months he will be ready to begin exploring solid foods. If you want him to have the best consider making your own baby food. It's not all that time consuming and it not only provides good nutrition it saves you money.

Here is how to do it step by step..

Step #1 Gather supplies

Baby Food

You do not need much to begin making your own baby food. A simple food mill or baby food grinder is great. An immersion blender will work or a regular blender. But if you have none of those do not let that stop you, a fork can mash the food too. You will also need something to freezer the baby food in. You can use an ice cube tray or you can purchase containers especially for that purpose.

Little Known Baby Facts

Babies are born with 300 bones, but by adult we have only 206 in our bodies. The reason? Some bones fuse together later.

Step #2 Pick Your Food

Baby food

Start with plain foods first. Apples, carrots, green beans, peaches - choose easy to digest foods. You can also do food combinations but it is better to start with one food at a time. This way you can watch for allergic reactions and allow his system to adjust.

Step #3 Prepare the Food

Wash and peel any foods that need peeled. Chop them in small pieces and place in enough water to cover. Simmer until completely soft. You can also use a steamer if you have one. This will even help save nutrients in the food. Drain the vegetables or fruit and save the water. Place the cooked food into the blender or food mill and choose puree. Add some of the cooking water to make it thinner if needed. You want it pretty thin for babies who are just starting to eat. A thicker puree is about a stage 2 food.

Step #4 - Freezer for Later

Fill ice cube tray holes with the baby food. Place in freezer until completely solid. Then pop out and place in a freezer bag. Now you have plenty of baby food on hand for whenever you need it. You can also buy special 1 and 2 ounce containers just to freezer baby food in.

Step #5 - Reap the Benefits

It is a simple as that! Now your baby can enjoy fresh, healthy food every day. No additives but what you put in it. Just simple wholesome food that you have prepared for your precious little one to enjoy. There is no need to buy commercial baby food when you can enjoy your own.

Great Resources to Have on Hand

When Makin Your Own Baby Food

baby foodMaking your own baby food is so much better than purchasing commercial baby food. It is healthier, tastes better and it is very easy to do. It's also very convenient to have on hand. It doesn't require any special items to do make your own baby food but there some items it is nice to have on hand. Here are some things we recommend.

Baby Food Grinders
These are so handy to have around. They create instant baby food on the go. You can easily take these with you where ever you are going. You grind the food and serve baby directly from the bowl on the top.

The Baby Food Mill by Kidco
This is the one I personally used and it does the job. It has 3 pieces - a grinding handle and plate, plunger base and the main piece. You simply slide the bottom piece down creating a "tube". Place your food in the tube, Insert the grinding place in the top and simply turn as you push the main piece down on to the tube. It has seals to keep food from seeping out and is so easy to clean. Durable, practical and priced under $15.

Green Sprouts Eco-friendly Baby Food Mill
This model works the same way but it designed for the eco-conscious person. It's a colorful green and is made polypropylene. It's BPA free making it perfect for baby.

Baby CubesTM 2 Oz. Baby Food Storage
These cute mini storage containers are perfect for your baby food. You can use ice cubes trays but these are very nice. They have a flip top lid allowing you to feed the baby directly from the container. These 2 ounce containers have no Phthalates, Bisphenol-A or PVC. They sit in a small frame and are designed for the freezer. You can also use them as snack containers.

Fresh N Freeze Baby Food Containers 12-Pack
This is another great baby food storage product. Twelve round containers that stack. They are marked for 1 ounce and 2 ounce servings. Great for small snack and fit nicely into a diaper bag.

Fresh Baby So Easy Baby Food/Breast Milk Trays
This is a very practical item to have on hand. Designed like an ice cube tray to hold baby food or breast milk it has a snap on lid to prevent spills. You can actually leave the baby food in this container instead of removing and placing freezer bags after freezing. There are twelve compartments per tray and you get two trays when you order.

Green Sprouts Eco-friendly Silicone Freezer Tray
This is another nice ice cube like tray. This one has holes that are a bit deeper and there are fifteen spaces. They are made from silicone making them heat resistant as well. These freezer trays are a very durable and practical product. You could make your own mini muffins for baby right in here too.

While none of these products are necessary to make your own baby food they are very handy. And none of them are expensive either.

Your lens said it all. For our youngest we made all the food just as described above - and if we chose to add to the family at some stage - we're definitely going to do it again.

Great stuff! A must read for a new mum wanting to make her own healthy baby food :)

Loads of great info, but pureeing food is unnecessary when weaning. You can just go straight for the finger foods, its what we did with our 2 boys, and my sister is doing with her little girl. No messing about with puree and spoon feeding reluctant infants, just a good variety of family food, and babies that aren't taught to eat more than they need. I have always made my own baby food.... from rice cereal to lamb casserole... it does take a bit of time and effort... but in the end I believe it's worth it.... :)

I have made a few batches of my own baby food. Unfortunately, work got in the way and I had to go back to the prepared stuff. However, I've been using some of the organic food brands you've featured like Plum Organics (great brand!).

I agree with Pastiche & I'm looking forward to starting my lil girl on this. I did make my own baby foods for my two boys, now 11 & 7. I think it's more flavorful for them anyway than the jarred stuff. If we can ever get to growing a garden this year it would be so great to add those veggies to her diet! So much better for her.
  • Pastiche Apr 2, 2011 @ 5:58 pm | delete
I am 100% in favor of feeding children homecooked foods from the start of solid foods. My oldest daughter is 44 and I made her baby food - people thought I was foolish or poverty-stricken to do it; my 2nd child is now 35 and I also cooked all her baby food from scratch. She is now preparing all organic foods for her toddler who's as healthy as her mom was. The super cool way to make baby foods is to grow your own fruits and veggies (and meat and milk if you have the resources and room) or to buy them from an organic farm or store, then you know there's no nasty stuff in the food at all!
