Quick Question!

We all know that there is no cure for asthma. However, do you think alternative treatment to reduce asthma attacks aside from drugs work?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes! There are lots of ways to reduce asthma episodes aside from relying on drugs.

ajgodinho says:

I have borderline Asthma and use natural ways to deal with it daily, but sometimes I need my inhaler when it does flare up. I have to give Buteyko a try.

Son Of Mary says:

As to Beas comment it wouldn't be incorporated because it would stop pharmaceutical cashflow. Futhermore there's a natural cure for everything but your physician will only prescribe it to you in the form of rx drugs.

Vingill says:

I attended a Buteyco workshop and I can testify to the health benefits of conscious breathing

nevergiveupgirl says:

From my own experience I prevent the development of asthma using breathing
exercises developed by Russian doctor Strelnikova. It work great for me.

AddaptAbilities says:

Asthma meds can be lifesavers -- literally. But I know from personal experience that asthma has a psychological and an emotional component too, and addressing those issues can make a big difference.

Kapalbility says:

I enjoy an asthma-free life by incorporating alternative treatment (Buteyko) and drugs to control my asthma.

No. I am a firm believer of drugs and think asthmatics should stay with them.

Beas says:

I don't have asthma but I can relate to the opinion that there's more to its treatment than just drugs. In general I would like to state that alternative medicine does not exist. As soon as an 'alternative treatment' is proven to work it will be incorporated by traditional medicine.

What is Buteyko Breathing Techniques?

A Short History of Buteyko Breathing Method

Dr. Buteyko

The Buteyko Method was also known as Voluntary Elimination of Deep Breathing (VEDB). This is a set of execises that focuses on deliberate control of ones breath to treat asthma and other breathing ailments.

The Buteyko breathing technique was developed in the 1980's by Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko, a Ukranian Doctor who specialized in asthma and other respiratory diseases. In Moscow, where he practiced medicine, while observing his patients with breathing illnesses, he realized that there was an association between the severity of their illnesses and their breathing rates.

After various experiments with patients, an effective set of exercises that focuses on deliberate breathing control was formed to control asthma and other respiratory ailments. Various professional groups were trained, and the practice was spread in Australia, the USA and the rest of the world.

The Concept Behind The Buteyko Breathing Techniques - Part 1

Support Theories Before We Explain Buteyko Breathing Techniques

Hyperventilate

Time to get Scientific. You are now hopping into the Geektron 2000. Fasten your seatbelts!

To fully understand the theory behind Buteyko breathing techniques, we must first grasp the concept of three things: Hyperventilation, the Vertigo Effect and Carbon Dioxide.

Hyperventilation is when you breathe more often than what is needed. (Not necessarily normal, more on that later.) This makes you breathe in more oxygen and release more carbon dioxide.

Vertigo is when you feel light headed when you breathe in too much. Is it because you are too flushed with oxygen? No. It is because you lack oxygen! Parodox, huh?

Carbon dioxide is a catalyst in our blood, acting as an unbinding agent between oxygen and hemoglobin (taxi for oxygen). Without carbon dioxide, oxygen stays glued onto the hemoglobin and cells won't get food. Less carbon dioxide, more oxygen atoms miss their bus stop.

Carbon Dioxide is barely present in the atmosphere (it is mainly nitrogen) and your body produces this air (as a waste material of energy production).

With these theories combined, we can say that the more a person hyperventilates, the less that person gets oxygen, although he has a lot of that in his body. I said necessary earlier, because lots of people breathe very fast, and that is innate to them.

The Concept Behind The Buteyko Breathing Techniques - Part 2

How Does Bueyko Breathing Technique Work With Those Theories?

Asthma

Now with those support theories clear, let's say an asthmatic hyperventilates by default. Let's just call that person... hmmm.. Roth.

Because Roth hyperventilates by default, he will eventually breathe out enough carbon dioxide for his body to scramble for oxygen. Of course his body does not want to perish, so what does it do?

It thickens the air passages. Lungs produce more mucus. Because of that, he begins to cough, and because his air passages in his lungs are full of mucus and constricted, whistling sounds are audible. Sounds familiar? Congratulations, Roth, you're having an asthma attack!

Give the body what it wanted in the first place: more oxygen by adding more carbon dioxide in your body, and the symptoms will subside and will appear less frequently in the future. That is the concept of Buteyko breathing techniques.

Thanks for riding Geektron 2000.

As an adult-onset person with Asthma that is requiring increasing amounts of medication this certainly sounds worth a try. The science behind it seems plausible and possible Particulaly as my asthma started during a period of particulaly high stress. I will give it a go. Medical alternatives are limited and unattractive - especailly long term. THANKYOU

Just got back from the doctor with a diagnosis of Asthma. My sister died of this, and I was not happy hearing that I have it. I was so interested in this Buteyko Breathing Technique. I'd never heard of it, and will put it into practice immediately to try to control my symptoms and maybe I won't have to rely so much on medication. Thank you for sharing this.

I have been teaching the Buteyko method for about 8 years now and now that it works fine for asthmatics if they change their automatic breathing pattern. Other techniques, mentioned on this page, include Strelnikova breathing gymnastic and it also works for asthma (as an emergency exercise and as a daily routine to move forward with the body oxygen index or Buteyko CP test).
