Make Your Own Butterbeer Recipe At Home & Serve It In Your Own Harry Potter Butterbeer Glasses

Looking for a very specific Harry Potter recipe? One for butterbeer, perhaps...

Butterbeer has been a huge success for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the whole world is talking about butterbeer.

You cannot buy the J.K. Rowling approved version of this hot or cold beverage anywhere else in the world and, therefore, every guest who visits the theme park in Orlando wants butterbeer.

You would expect line ups for the rides and attractions but I read that people even waited in line for an hour to purchase their souvenir mug of butterbeer, as shown here. Rumour has it that they actually ran out of frozen butterbeer on the day the theme park opened!

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that you can actually make your very own, non-alcholic version of butterbeer at home. My sons are going to love experimenting to find the perfect Harry Potter butterbeer recipe. Please join us on our journey to Hogsmeade Village and The Three Broomsticks as we strive to find the perfect butterbeer recipe.

On this page, you will find many links to many butterbeer recipes, information about real butterbeer and the Harry Potter style of butterbeer and links to buy your very own butterbeer mugs from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Cheers!

What Is Butterbeer?

butterbeer-recipeThe real drink 'butterbeer' was made in the Tudor period from beer, sugar, eggs, nutmeg and butter. However, it is unclear as to whether the butterbeer in the Harry Potter books includes alcohol but it is not considered harmful to young witches or wizards although referred to as mildy intoxicating and definitely intoxicating to house elves.

J.K. Rowling introduced us to butterbeer in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and this beverage is referenced a few times in the rest of the book series. More recently, when asked about butterbeer, she told Bon Appetit magazine that she imagines that butterbeer "tastes a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch."

At The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida, you can order butterbeer frozen or ice cold from a street vendor or at the Hog's Head, a real pub that does sell real beer, too. News reports recommend the butterbeer for children.

Staff from the amusement park searched for THE perfect Butterbeer recipe. Their efforts wound up in a hotel kitchen in Scotland where they prepared the brew in order to obtain approval for the recipe from You Know Who. (Lest I mislead you, note that approval was not required from Lord Voldemort but rather from J.K. Rowling herself.) Their recipe did indeed meet with Rowling's approval and now you can order your butterbeer in Orlando where it is said to be made from a sugary drink that is somewhat cream soda-ish with a marshmallow 'head.' Some say it tastes like a cross between a shortbread cookie and butterscotch flavour.

Rupert Grint (who plays Ron Weasley in the movies) said, "We were at the Pub yesterday, and the drinks are amazing. The butterbeer, the frozen butterbeer is like nothing I've ever tasted before."

Our Thoughts On Butterbeer Recipe #1

butterbeer-recipe

Butterbeer Recipe #1 is the first butterbeer recipe that we tried.

As you can see from the photo, the recipe worked perfectly. The drink was most definitely a very rich and frothy butterbeer.

However, we were not keen on the flavour combination of butterscotch and ginger ale so we'll keep trying to find the perfect butterbeer recipe for us. You could substitute club soda, I suppose, but we are not crazy about that either.

If you do try this recipe, make sure to report back about what you think of the drink.

On a side note, this recipe did make the best-ever butterscotch sauce!

It surprised me when I stumbled across this cookbook, Butterbeer Recipes, for your Kindle. The tagline for the book is "Smuggle in some muggle magic with simple Butterbeer recipes" but there is not much more information available than that. However, if you are looking for butterbeer recipes the low price of $3.99 makes this book an affordable gamble. If you do buy it, be sure to come back and let us know what you think.

Butterbeer is a popular drink in the Harry Potter series - a nonalcoholic (or very slightly so) liquid confection that is described as "a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch." It's served cold or hot, in foaming tankards. Just like butter chicken, butterbeer doesn't necessarily contain butter - the name in fact refers to the butterscotch used to flavor it.

Finally, a book full of Harry Potter recipes! All I can say is, "It is about time." Many years ago, I struggled to put together a Harry Potter themed menu for my son's birthday party. When I went looking, I discovered that there were NO Harry Potter cookbooks available despite the proliferation of books about Harry Potter on an endless stream of other subjects.

This cookbook, The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook, was released on September 18, 2010, and contains more than 150 easy recipes to help you recreate the delicious world that Harry Potter lives in. Included will be the dessert Harry loves so much, the Treacle Tart; Mrs. Weasley's (Molly's) Meat Pies; Kreacher's French Onion Soup; and, the Hogwarts Express staple, Pumpkin Pasties. Thrill your family and friends with this positively magical collection of recipes.
