Butterflies and Dragonflies Totems

Ranked #4,760 in Pets & Animals, #119,652 overall | Donates to Wild Animal Sanctuary

Our Totems can also be insects

Once a class I attended- one of the students said in her shamanic journey the only thing that kept showing up was An ANT! Can you believe it! She could not figure out why in the world an ant would keep showing up. She was totally convinced that she was doing something wrong. The teacher looked at her and said, "That is a wonderful totem to have. Ants teach us many things, they symbolize hard workers and team workers. When ants are building a community they do it in groups or as a team." The student sat there for a moment looking a little baffled but finally understood what she was being told.

Actually, all insects including Butterflies and Dragonflies have a lot of fantastic "Spiritual Medicine" to teach us. I am going to share my understanding of what it means to have a Butterfly or a Dragonfly and/or both as Spiritual Helpers and/or Spiritual Totems

Butterfly Medicine

What it means when you have a Butterfly as a Totem

Anni is a friend of mine who is also a: Clairvoyant, Intuitive Counselor, Life Coach, Theta Healer Practitioner and Reiki Master, just to name a few things. I met Anni online last year, and have always had a connection with her. Her focus is to empower others to understand their life and relationships from a spiritual perspective. She will often incorporate distance healing during her readings.

This is a little of what Ann said about Butterfly and Dragonfly medicine:

Butterfly

"Butterfly is transformation; the mind, the ability to know the mind or to change it. What is going on in your life? Observe the transformations that are happening in your life at the moment, perhaps an idea that is not born yet and is in fruitation so to speak. Are you manifesting anythng? If you are it will come about in the spring. The butterfly has three stages (1) A Thought or Idea (2) Larva Stage- do i need to make a decision? (3) Cocoon Stage- am i developing something to make my idea reality?(4) The Birth- Am I sharing my completed idea? Ask yourself these questions and you will find out where you are"

Dragonfly

"The Dragonfly is of dreamtime and illusions. It brings about memories of places where magic reigned some legends have it that the dragonfly was once a dragon. The dragonfly is the essence of the winds and of change. The messages of wisdom and enlightenment and the communication of the elemental world. In essence this world is full of nature spirits dragonfly medicine ask you to seek out parts of your habits that you need to change. The Dragonfly brings vision of power"

According to Ted Andrews Butterflies symbolizes Transmutation and the Dance of Joy.

"The butterfly is a powerful symbol in myth and religion. Often Native Americans see the butterfly as a symbol of change, joy and color. Butterflies remind us that life is a dance and we need to dance through it powerfully and also with great pleasure.

Butterfly Medicine reminds us to make changes when the opportunities present themselves. Transforamtion is inevitable, but butterfly will help teach you that growth and change does not have to be traumatic. It will teach you that it can occur as gently, as sweetly and as joyfull as we wish."

For me personally, the Butterfly teaches me a certain kind of joy. It is a joy that is hard to explain except to say it is child-like. When I see butterflies, it feels like my child within wants to burst out and chase after the butterfly and play with it. She wants to be closer to it and watch it and look at its fur like wings. (Yes, I realize I was talking about myself in the third person)

Last year during one of my photography adventures, a butterfly landed on my shoe and I thought I was going to explode with excitement. It was amazing. I was actually able to take several pictures of it, so I am sharing one with you below.

Dragonflies

Dragonfly is both of air and water. It represents change and the power of light and also the subconscious mind and thoughts. Ted Andrews mentions that people with a dragonfly totem are very emotional and passionate in the yearly years, but as they get older, they learn to balance it with greater mental clarity and control.

Other symbolisms that Dragonfly carries: Prosperity, good luck, strength, peace and harmony. Dragonfly reminds us that we need to pay attention to our deeper thoughts. Since Dragonflies do not live a long lives, they understand they must live life to its fullest. As you are paying attention to your deeper thoughts, keep in mind that it is important for all of us to live life to its fullest. Life is too short to carry heavy baggage with you, allow yourself to relax and breathe in fresh air. Stop and watch a dragonfly or butterfly for a few moments, you will be amazed how much better you will feel after a few minutes of relaxation!

The name of the kind of Dragonfly in my photo's is the:

I am fascinated by these totems. You did a wonderful job explaining them, and I loved the music and photos too. Last summer, I really noticed butterflies being present to me. It was a powerful message I was getting from them. :)

My 2 best friends and I always associated each other by Insects. I was the butterfly, Jen was the Dragonfly & Missy was the Bumblebee ~ When Missy died, Jen & I got Bumblebee tattoos, ~ Then Jen died ~ so now I have a Bumblebee & a Dragonfly. Whenever I see a Dragonfly or a Bumblebee, I know they're still with me. ~ Blessed >*
