Creating a Colorful Retreat

Butterflies are beautiful, graceful insects that children enjoy watching flit around the garden. Unlike some other insects, butterflies aren't scary or menacing, but rather peaceful, colorful, and elusive.

This lens will zoom in on creating a fantastic butterfly bedroom. Since these marvelous creatures come in so many shapes and colors, it is easy to customize her room any way she likes. You could choose a palate of greens, purples, pinks, or blues - butterflies can work with any color. And as you may know, when it comes to little girls, it is all about her favorite color!

Girls Butterfly Bedding

Her bed will be the most prominent focal point in her room, so start with a great butterfly bedding set and design the rest of the room around it. You can match the walls and accessories with the color and style of the quilt or comforter. Kids bedding is usually made from cotton - which is a good choice because it's comfortable and easy to wash.

Setting up the atmosphere for butterflies

Imagine an enchanted forest filled with magic and whimsy. When I think of the ultimate butterfly bedroom, I am taken to a local indoor butterfly sanctuary near where I live. When you walk into this gigantic greenhouse, there are several wooden foot bridges passing over trickling streams and small ponds filled with koi fish. Soft instrumental music chimes from somewhere overhead. Bright tropical flowers and lush green vines twist around gates and tree trunks. And of course, hundreds of colorful butterflies flit from here to there.

The butterflies rest in all kinds of favorite spots - from stones, to flowers, to little dishes of nectar, and even on top of people's heads. If you sit still long enough and are wearing the right color, many different types of butterflies will find your arms, legs, and head a suitable resting place. And you will feel honored by their trust in you.

Give Her a Canopy

What little girl doesn't love a canopy? Hang this Heavenly Rainbow Bed Canopy (right) above her bed for super sweet dreams. The light, airy fabric  will add enchantment to her sleeping space.

There is something fun and exciting about placing a canopy over a bed. What makes this canopy so great is that is is really affordable (as opposed to purchasing an entire canopy bed). Just screw it into the ceiling and you're all set. It's a quick and easy way to add charm to her room.

Add a Picket Fence

There is something about a picket fence that compliments a butterfly bedroom. It has a garden feel and can be a fun and unexpected element in a child's room. This easy to apply picket fence from WALLIES includes pre-pasted, vinyl-coated cutouts that you can easily adhere to the wall in just the right place. (They are easily removed with water, too!).

So, in thinking about your child's own butterfly sanctuary, think of:

Lots of color - pale or vibrant is up to you

Light, flowing, sheer fabrics

iron hung on the wall

5 Do It Yourself Ideas for Decorating Her Butterfly Bedroom

1) Paint a white picket fence on part of the wall. Add some painted flowers, greenery, and little colorful painted butterflies to create a garden atmosphere.

2) Try your hand at painting a large, colorful butterfly wing "headboard" on the wall

3) Another headboard idea: take an old wrought iron garden gate, clean it up and attach it to the wall behind the bed. Twist some artificial flowers and vines around the gate.

4) Create custom switch plate covers: cut out some butterfly pictures from magazines, photos, or scrapbook paper and decoupage them to the switch plates.

5) Make her a personalized growth chart to hang on the wall. Get a piece of canvas and decorate with paints and butterfly stencils. You could even glue on some small nylon butterflies. Hang with pretty ribbons.
