Sugar Water and the Swallowtail Butterfly
When I went outside the Swallowtail Butterfly was nowhere to be seen. However, I love flowers in the morning when they are all fresh and revived from the blistering heat from the day before, so I ended up shooting some pretty good photos of flowers I am growing.
Right, when I was getting ready to go inside, guess who showed up? Yep, the teasing Swallowtail Butterfly! Trying to capture that little guy was a trip! My husband came out and seen me I suppose, but he stepped back inside the house and came back out with this tiny bowl of sugar water. The butterfly would fly around and finally stopped long enough to check it out from a distance. This was the photo I was able to capture.
That ordeal is what lead me to write this page. I never knew they had "Butterfly Feeders available. Oh, by the way by the end of the evening my husband had ordered me a butterfly feeder from eBay and I cannot wait to get it!

Homemade Butterfly Nectar
"Butterflies do not like their nectar as sweet as Hummingbirds"
Ingredients
- One Part Sugar
- Nine Parts Water
Instructions
Warm the mixture together on the stove to make sure the sugar has dissolved completely. After it has cooled, put a little into the "Butterfly Fedder" and store the remaining in the refrigerator- I use a mason jar to keep the nectar fresh.
Be sure to change out the water every couple of days in the warmer weather because the heat makes the mixture spoil faster.
Homemade Hummingbird Nectar
"Hummingbirds love their nectar sweet!"
Ingredients
- One Part Sugar-I use 1/4 cup
- Four Parts Water-I use I cup distilled water
Instructions
Mix together and warm the mixture together on the stove to make sure the sugar has completely dissolved. DO NOT add red food dye to the nectar mix because the dye has no nutritional value to it and it can cause damage to the hummingbird's kidneys. Try to make sure your hummingbird feeder is red; if not you can attach a red silk flower to the feeder for decoration. After the mixture has cooled; add some to the hummingbird feeder and store the remaining nectar in the refrigerator- I use a mason jar to keep the nectar fresh.
Be sure to change out the nectar at least once a week and in warmer weather perhaps ever two days. This will help to keep the nectar fresh and not ferment. Direct sunlight speeds up the fermentation process spoiling the nectar a lot faster.
Butterfly Nectar
Hummingbird Nectar
You can chase a butterfly all over the field and never catch it. But if you sit quietly in the grass it will come and sit on your shoulder.

We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.

- I'll be looking forward to some of your new "butterfly at feeder" pictures which, I'm sure, will be as beautiful as your gorgeous flower photos! Now, time for me to go get the hummingbird feeder, which should have been out a few weeks ago!
