The Metamorphosis of a Design

A number of months ago I became inspired to (self) learn wire sculpting & add that to my limited jewelry making repertoire of skills... So I bought myself some Artistic & other colored craft wire, an inexpensive wigjig, rubber block, rubber mallets & nylon coated pliers (which came later but are a lifesaver) and began playing.

Needless to say tons of wire was wasted and a lot of failed design attempts wound up in the circular file...

I desired to make some crosses & wanted to create something beyond the ordinary and wound up trying to incorporate some abstract floral design elements to the basic cross design & these were looking pretty cool! I thought, "I would love to design some butterfly & dragonflies!" but for some reason I just couldn't get it all together... After working on some dream interpretations involving the butterfly symbol I got a jumpstart of both motivation & inspiration and ... "Wella!" the cross and the butterfly morphed into a single unique & very special design that actually worked for me.

These are abstract influenced designs, not clearly butterfly looking... You must find the influence in each piece (that's part of the fun) because I wanted to keep the integrity of the cross design intact, first and foremost. They are very ornate as far as cross designs go.

I've also had this idea about using Niobium, as I had been wanting to create some kind of monochromatic jewelry but found the standard Niobium findings (eyepins, headpins) were not flexible enough for me to work with... I thought about trying to create some crosses with a smaller gauge Niobium wire, but never got around to it before because my funds are so limited & purchasing Niobium was something that really hit my budget hard but I found a supplier who offered it at pretty reasonable prices (as it in the price range of sterling silver). I purchased some after I had the butterfly design down pat, even so I still wasted a bit but got three really nice crosses out of the small lot of wire that I purchased.

Some of the creative results of this "adventure in design" follow...

The Life Cycle of the Butterfly, A Symbol of Spiritual Transformation

Some insights of my own on the connection between butterflies & Christianity..

My personal belief is that receiving Christ as Saviour (salvation) brings about a genuine spiritual metamorphosis, so the butterfly cross design is truly fitting.. and (like me) these are unique, no two are exactly alike... & all a bit abstract.

* The Life Cycle of the Butterfly Symbol

Represents a Spiritual transition phase...
Prior to salvation people who have entered into the "seeking phase" of their walk with God (searching to know about God & who He is... ) are in a kind of "cocoon stage" of their spiritual walk with God, God is working on them "from the inside out", the Holy Spirit wooing and preparing hearts making them fertile ground for God's Word and accepting Christ.

* God's Holy Spirit & The Butterfly Symbol

If you watch the normal path of the butterfly it 'seems' completely erratic & without plan BUT when you read about the flight of the monarchs you will understand much better that they have highly advanced navigational systems built into them and they are not nearly as flighty as they seem. Only God could design such a scientific marvel as the butterfly, not only beautiful but hi-tech too!

This reminds me of the scripture where the seemingly directionless path of the "wind" reminds me of the flight of the butterfly...

John 3:7-9 (New King James Version)

7 Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit."

Non-believers are waiting to hear the Word that will transform their spirits. The Gospel and God's Word can also work as "transforming butterflies" of spiritual revelation... once touched with this knowledge of the Truth people respond by saying, "Yes that is me." They are no longer in the dark.

* Transformation results in a New Creation

God's Holy Spirit orchestrates & follows the path of these butterflies, from pre-salvation [cocoon stage], to their emergence as new creations bearing the image of Christ & will continue with them throughout the course of their their walk with Christ as spiritual advisor and guide.

Visual Instructions how to make a butterfly cross...

A lot of this is freeform work after creating main form on wigjig

This first example is a large abstract butterfly cross, i am working on organizing the butterfly cross photos so "bee" patient! I have a few pictures on how I make a small one also.

The Materials

I've got a bunch of really lovely cross pendants made with a rainbow of Artistic wire colors (the Silver-plated look awesome!) and found that 22 gauge worked best for me, I can use 20, but found it is too hard on my joints. I spent a lot of money playing with 24 and 26 gauge wire, combining colors and experimenting but most of the finished pieces are just too delicate to use as jewelry.

My dream is to mainly work with Niobium. Right now I can only purchase the Niobium in extreme limitation and the Silver-plated Artistic wire. My first E-bay introduction of the crosses were the Niobium ones which are monochromatic overall.

I experimented with adding some Swarovski Rhinestone accents and these really add great sparkle and a touch of beauty to each cross, though some of these designs stand-alone without them.

The next design IF was "What do I hang these on?... this had to be different so I started creating some satin cord and rubber cord necklaces with plated cord tips and different bails. Once I can afford it, I want to buy some faceted sterling ball chain necklaces because I think these would look great on them.
