Mmmm...Buttermilk Pie!

Every year, I make Buttermilk Pie at Thanksgiving at my family's request. Usually, I have to make several!

(inserting my best Paula Deen impression here...) Now, I thought just everyone knew what a buttermilk pie is, honey! Who knew the rest of the world was so deprived??? I mean, we Southern folk *do* have all the gooood stuff to eat, but you'd think someone had squeezed a lemon in some peoples' mouths when I said I was making Buttermilk Pie!

Now, everybody has their own version of buttermilk pie too, you know. Some use more eggs than others, some use butter & some don't (sacrilege!), some use less sugar. Why...Emeril even puts lemon zest in his! Did you ever hear of such a thang?

Well, honey you just have to take my word that mine is the best, ok?

My Buttermilk Pie...A Holiday Family Tradition

I don't exactly remember how it started. The original recipe appeared in the newspaper one year, a long, long time ago. Mom cut it out and showed it to me. It sounded so good, I couldn't resist so I baked up a couple. I took her one and I kept one here at home.

We enjoyed the pie, but it seemed a bit "gooey," so you know I had to touch that up a little. Experimenting with it, I finally developed my version of that Buttermilk Pie. Funny, nobody minded "disposing" of the experiments. LOL

One year, it was my turn to have the whole family over for Thanksgiving. I was afraid I wouldn't have enough for all with 2 pecan pies and 2 pumpkin pies, so I made 2 buttermilk pies as well. Odd but the buttermilk pies vanished before the others!

The following year, and every year since ~ I've been asked to make my buttermilk pies (along with the others, naturally). They're always gone first and sometimes, I have to make a couple more. I used to take them to work, but a few folks wouldn't even taste them because the pies have buttermilk in them! Oh well!

I'm still making my buttermilk pies, but now my daughters do too, for their families. =)

A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.

But What Is Buttermilk Pie???

So here's the scoop, right out of the Wikipedia, for heaven's sake:

Buttermilk pie is a traditional custard-like pie of the southern United States. The basic filling consists of a mixture of eggs, sugar, buttermilk, dry biscuit mix, and butter; variations on the recipe may include flavorings such as lemon zest. Buttermilk pies may be made with or without a pastry crust. The liquid filling is poured into a pie pan (into a crust if one is used) and baked until the mixture sets. It is related to chess pie and pecan pie. The pie may be eaten either while still warm from the oven or after being chilled.

Sylvia's Famous Buttermilk Pie Recipe

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 4 - 5 rounded tablespoons flour
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 unbaked deep dish 9 inch pie shell, or 2 regular unbaked 9 inch pie shells

Directions...

Cream the sugar and butter together. Add the flour and eggs and beat well.

Add the buttermilk and vanilla; mix well & pour into pie shells.

I find that the filling makes enough for two of the regular 9" pie shells if you buy them frozen (I do sometimes; it's faster). If I use the deep dish version of the frozen pie shells, I can get it all into one shell.

Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes, or until tests done. Top should be slightly crusty and brown.

If you find this pie a bit on the sweet side; reduce vanilla first and see how you like it. Then, try reducing the sugar. It should be sweet.
