Just made it... It's so sweet, I could barely eat it. ;/ And I *love* buttermilk pie. I'm sticking to a recipe that is like this one, but has a pinch of cinammon, half the sugar, and a little lemon zest.

I have heard of Buttermilk Pie, but have never tasted it! I think the day has come. ;)

I'd never heard of it, but you've piqued my interest. My favorite pie might be the Swiss Apple Pie my mother used to make. She's arranged apple wedges in a pie crust, pour a custard mixture over the top and give it a dusting of cinnamon and sugar on top. It was a great dessert...but a couple of large slices even made a nice breakfast!

might want to revise your directions to day melted butter for those of us who didn't take the time to watch video
  • boutiqueshops Feb 5, 2012 @ 12:05 am | delete
The butter doesn't need to be melted for my recipe, since you're going to cream it into the sugar. However, *softened* butter would definitely make it easier to cream into the sugar. =)

  • RobHenry Dec 10, 2011 @ 6:29 pm | delete
I wish I had found this before I used the last of my Buttermilk. I don't normally purchase buttermilk at the store, but made some mashed potatoes that called for it this week. I did not know of any good recipes, so ended up making buttermilk biscuits with the rest of it.

Next time, I am gonna try this though, because it looks really good!

In South Africa we make the exact same recipe, without the pie shell and call it a buttermilk pudding. It is a very big favorite. We also make a similar pie with normal milk and cinnamon that we call a milk tart.

Normally I can imagine how a recipe will taste, but buttermilk is such an unfamiliar ingredient to me that I can't even imagine how this tastes. I'm imagining a filling that tastes like supersweet sour cream. Am I even close?! I'd definitely want to try this if I had a chance!

We make Chess pies in my family which are very close to buttermilk pies. My grandmother started baking them for Thanksgiving in the 40s or 50s and my mother has continued the tradition. I'm glad to see other cooks are are also passing the old Southern favorite recipes down to the next generation..

The jury is still out on "Sylvia;s Buttermilk Pie." I tasted it just before chilling, and something appears to be lacking---a pinch of salt, perhaps. The top never crusted as described, and it took nearly an hour for the pie to set. The flour measurements stated could have been more specific. I expected a yummier pie for all of the rich ingredients used. Next time, I'll add a pinch of salt and maybe some lemon or toasted coconut. I would not add more than 4 Tbls. of flour because the texture is a tad bit pasty already. Maybe the pie will get better as it chills and sits. My favorite pie is "Chess." I, like Valerie, also had a problem with one of Emeril's pies--Pecan. Then I found Paula Deen's Burbon Pecan Pie, which is excellent.
  • Valarie Dec 28, 2010 @ 11:16 am | delete
I tried Emeril's buttermilk pie 12/23/10. Disappointed. So I went on the web to find me a new recipe to try. I'm trying to recreate the best buttermilk pie that I've ever had at Les Sisters'. I'm going to give Silvia's a go--it looks like it might be a keeper.

I discovered buttermilk only a few months ago. My husband is diabetic so i make one with sugar and one with slenda, they are both great. I also sometimes put pecans in bottom before pouring in filling.

This looks really good. I'm with Kim, if it's anything like ricotta pie, this has to be good.
  • boutiqueshops Sep 22, 2010 @ 9:16 pm | delete
You'll love the pie, honey~I know you will. Thanks for stopping by!
  • SacredCynWear Sep 22, 2010 @ 5:49 pm | delete
Great Paula Dean impersonation!! I love your recipe for buttermilk pie. I have to try making it for Thanksgiving Dinner too! Of course I'm going to have to buy a good mixer first. Because I don't have a mixer anymore. I am going to look at the great selection of mixers you have, and then report back when I make it. (*I'm a Southern girl, and have never had buttermilk pie... oh the insanity!)
  • KimGiancaterino Sep 21, 2010 @ 1:04 pm | delete
We love ricotta pie, and buttermilk pie sounds very similar. I'll put it on my list of desserts to make. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

Excuse my ignorance, but I've never heard of Buttermilk Pie. And I'm quite disgusted with myself, how could I have missed such a lucious sounding pie? The next wet day I'm making it!
