How to Buy a Shofar

Ranked #14,164 in Culture & Society, #286,442 overall

Its a blast!

People all over the world are discovering the ancient horn instrument called the Shofar. Jews have used the Shofar as part of their religious services for millennia. Today many Christians have discovered the key role that the Shofar plays in the Bible. Also many musicians have discovered that the Shofar can be used in their music.

If you are interested in buying a Shofar but don't know where to start, you have come to the right place. I will walk you through the process of choosing the right Shofar for your needs.

Buying your Shofar

A Step by Step Guide

  1. Decide which kind of Shofar you would like. The main kinds which are available are Ram's Horn and Kudu (also known as Yemenite). The Kudu Shofar is very long and impressive. The Ram's horn is smaller, but it has much sybolism attached to it. Also the Ram's horn is going to be easier to take around with you wherever you would like.

Also Shofars are usually available in fully polished or partially polished styles. Decide if you want your shofar to have a more finished or more natural look.

Another choice you have is if you want an unembelleshed or decorated Shofar. Many stores offer Shofars with silver coating or painted Shofars.
  2. Shop for your Shofar. If you have a Judaica store in your neighborhood, they may have Shofars for sale. They may even let you try out the different Shofars to see which one you like the best. Watch out though, brick and mortar Judaica stores often mark up their Shofars very much. You may pay 50%-100% more than online.
  3. Your other option is to purchase your Shofar online.
You will probably pay less online. You won't be able to try out your Shofar before you buy it. But if you purchase from a site that specializes in Shofars, they will have tested out all of the Shofars to make sure they have a clear sound.
  4. Decide if you want any accessories for your Shofar. You may want a nice decorative bag for your Shofar, or a stand to display it prominently in your home or office. Save money on shipping and purchase it together with your Shofar.
  5. Enjoy practicing your Shofar for many years to come. If you take good care of it it will last a lifetime.

While I think the Yemenite shofars are fascinating to look at, I think I prefer the simplicity and the traditional aspects of the ram's horn.
