History of Archery

The history of Archery dates back to pre 25,00 bc when stone arrowheads were used mainly to hunt animals. The next improvement was the use of a Flint arrowhead.

It was not until the Egyptians that a composite bow appeared  in about 2,500 bc these bows had a range of about 400yds and were used on the back of charriots. Since this time archers have played major roles in battles all over the world.

In 1066 the Norman King William defeated and killed the then king of England Harold with archers. In 1333 a Scottish army was defeated in battle mainly due to the 2,000 longbow archers, this battle showed the potential ot the English longbow.

More History of Archery

At the battle of Crecy Northern France in 1346 1,542 french knights were defeated for the lose of 50 english due to the long bow.

Another great victory for the long bow was at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 when Henry V army of 1,500 men at arms and 5,500 Archers defeated a massive french army of 23,000 french Knights, records indicate that 10,000 french died for the lose of 100 english.

End of the Archers War

In 1520 the musket was invented and it would soon come to replace the Bow as a major weapon of war. In 1595 all bows were ordered to be replaced by muskets, but still they were used in battles. It was not until 1644 at Tipper Muir the last battle that used English archers.

Although Bows were still used in battles in other countries including the USA where the native Indians used them to great effect against the US Cavelry, the Battle of the Little BigHorn in 1876.

Archery and Sport

The Bow had been replaced by the musket but this was not the end of the Bow, it was now used in sport. In 1798 an arrow was shot 972yds, this record stood for nearly 200 years and was not surpassed until modern technology finaly defeated it with high tech bows and arrows.
In 1879 the first tournament of the national archery association took place in chicago. In 1900 it was in the olympics and in the 1904 and 1908 event women took part as well. In 1920 Archery was dropped from the Olympics and did not reappear until 1972.
In 1931 the International Archery Federation was formed and in 1934 the state of Wisconsin had its first bow hunting season.
1956 saw the pistol grip appear on bows and soon sights and all other technology would appear. In 1966 the International Field Archery Association was founded.
Today millions of people world wide take part in Archery compitions and events or are members of clubs. This is one of the oldest sports in the world, why not try it people of all ages, sex's and disablities enjoy this fantastic sport, go on have a go.

    Very cool, nice history of archery! My dad had one of those big compound bows that I couldn't flex at all, but he taught me a bit of archery on a smaller bow as well. It's a great sport! 5*
