Beeswax Candles

Beeswax has its own light, natural honey scent, a pleasing alternative home scent for those unable to tolerate the smell of heavy perfumes and florals. Most sheets of beeswax are manufactured with a honeycomb design imprinted on them, adding texture and visual interest to your beeswax projects.

Beeswax has a completely clean and non-toxic burn.
Furthermore, beeswax is a fuel that, when burned, emits negative ions.

Beeswax candles are especially indicated for people who suffer from allergies, hay fever, asthma, etc. Beeswax candles burn slower than paraffin, have a pleasant aroma and have a very soothing effect on the ear.

Beeswax is deservedly popular but not common except from small specialist producers. It is pleasantly aromatic and almost smokeless, but expensive.

History Of Candle Making

The candle was developed independently in many countries. In Rome, around the first century, candles were made out of tallow and the pith of rushes.

The Egyptians and Cretans made the candle from beeswax, as early as 3000 BC. The early candle was made from various forms of natural fat, tallow, and wax.

In the 18th century, spermaceti, oil produced by the sperm whale, was used to produce a superior candle. Late in the 18th century, colza oil and rapeseed oil came into use as much cheaper substitutes.

Paraffin was first distilled in 1830, and revolutionized candle-making, as it was an inexpensive material which produced a high-quality, odorless candle that burned reasonably cleanly.

The industry was devastated soon after, however, by the distillation of kerosene (confusingly also called paraffin oil or just paraffin). This excellent fuel for lamps gave the candle its current status as a primarily decorative item.

Recently resin based candles that are freestanding and transparent have been developed, with the claim that they burn longer than traditional paraffin candles.

Trick Candles

Trick candles are a novelty candle used often at children's birthday parties. These candles relight themselves.

Using a fuse similar to those in dynamite sticks, the principle being that by igniting magnesium inserted into the wick of the candle, the paraffin vapor given off when a candle is blown out can be set alight, and through this, the candle can reignite.

Despite being a principle shared with dynamite, these fuses are, however, much less dangerous, and are easily extinguished with water.

Unity Candles

The lighting of a unity candle is a relatively recent addition to the traditional wedding ceremony, most popular in the United States.

The unity candle ceremony uses two taper candles with a large pillar candle (called the "unity candle") in the center.

At the beginning of the wedding ceremony, a representative from each family (usually the mothers of the bride and groom) light the two taper candles. Later in the ceremony (usually after the formal vows), the bride and groom use the two taper candles to light the large pillar (unity) candle together.

Often a unity candle is decorated with the wedding invitation, an inscription, a picture of the couple, or other ornamentation. The candles are almost always white.

The lighting ceremony may be accompanied by special music, an explanation of the symbolism, or just some period of mutual gazing by the happy couple.

In some circles, it is customary for the couple to save the unity candle and relight it on anniversaries.

It is sometimes performed to symbolize the joining together of the two families, and their love for the bride and the groom, into one united family that loves the new husband and wife.

More often it is to symbolize the union of two individuals, becoming one in commitment.

The popular explanation is that the taper candles are lit by representatives from each family to symbolize the love and allegiance that each family has for either the bride or the groom.

As the bride and groom use these two flames to light the unity candle, they bring the love of both families together in a united love of the new couple.

Generally, the two tapers are left burning and replaced in their holders (because each family's love for their own will continue).

However, in some ceremonies they may blow out their individual candles.

When the ceremony is alternatively performed to symbolize simply the joining together of the bride and groom, the tapers may be blown out, to indicate that the two lives have been permanently merged, or they may leave them lit beside the central candle, symbolizing that the now-married partners have not lost their individuality.[2]
