Why Do Cats Scratch?
What Are The Reasons behind Cat Scratching?
Coming home from work, to find the couch destroyed and the curtains torn, most people don't have a clue why cats scratch up their furniture. Some people think that the cats scratch just to annoy them, but this isn't true. Cats scratch for the following five reasons and this can be avoided by taking appropriate measures against cat scratching...The five most important reasons why cats scratch furniture and anything else.
The five Reasons Cats Scratch:
1. To exercise their body by stretching themselves while scratching.
2. To tune muscles in their bodies and keep themselves flexible.
(cats don't have Gyms to go to ;-))
3. To mark their territory. Heard about this before? How can a cat mark it's territory by scratching? Listen, Cats posses little oil fragments glands beneath their nails, so that when scratching, the oil glands under their nails release a certain smell that marks the territory as theirs.
4. Like in nature, Cats sharpen their nails by scratching at trees, rotting barks and anything else they can get to.
5. In nature, cats would exercise themselves by climbing trees, scratching up the trees and also by hanging of branches and pulling themselves up onto a high tree or branch. Now that all this has been take from them, the only fun thing left for them, is to scratch. So please don't deprive your cat of it's only Fun thing left to do that actually provides exercise for it!
If you don't apreciate your cats scratching problem, there are other ways around it, but trying to stop cats scratching, certainly won't work!
Cats scratch for their pure Pleasure! They love scratching, just like you love Coffee or TV.
Cats don't scratch purposeful, no they scratch because they always do, did, and like to and ever will!

Double sided tape or aluminium foil.
Most cats dislike the feeling and sound of foil, and most cats hate things that stick to their fur. Some people say that, double-sided sticky tape used in carpet installation works well, although we think it rather cruel if it sticks to the cats furr and can hurt or harm your cat!
9. I once heard from some site online, one should regularly cut your cats nails so that it won't be able to scratch. However, I think that neither declawing nor trimming the cats nails is a nice thing to do. Read in my next post why.
10. Get your cat a cat scratching tree or post.
This is the easiest solution to a cat scratching problem, since no matter what of the above you will try, the core issue will still proceed in being that your cat LOVES TO SCRATCH!
Therefore, I recommend one should get a cat something that it can exercise itself on, climb, scratch and enjoy!

Compare 3 Different kinds of Cat Scratching Trees
Learn which of these 3 different cat Scratching trees is the best one to have!

To Begin with, which cat scratching tree do you like?
Think about it...
Which Cat Scratching Tree looks to you the sturdiest, safest and best cat scratching tree for your cat?
Which Cat Scratching tree, looks like your cat would love to sit on it, sleep on it and play on it? If you aren't sure which to decide for, then let me help you.
What you should consider before buying any cat scratching tree for your cat:
1. Are the ledges wide enough for my cat to comfortably sleep or sit on?
2. (If you have more than one cat) Will my cats be able to sleep together on one of the ledges?
3. Will my cats fall of the tree if they play and don't pay attention?
This all depends if your chosen cat tree has wide ledges or narrow ledges.
Wide ledges are always better than narrow ledges, since it's less likely your cat will fall off the ledge and hurt itself.
Also, wide ledges for your cat/s is better, since they can all play on them, climb and jump from one ledge to another without the worry of falling off.'
4. Is the cat tree padded with plush or material covers all over to make my cat comfortable on the ledges and corners?
5. Are there any caves or holes my cat would like to crawl into? Are they big or small? Round or square? How many are there on the cat condo?
Some types of cats preffer round small cubbies, while some other love square little boxes to hide in.
From My personal experience, I find that most cats love round caves, high perches and mice to play with that dangle on a string.
6. Are there any mice on this cat condo? Mice are always a great attraction as well as a superb entertainment for cats. Mostly, it's nice to have them already coming along with the cat tree, although not a "must have". Sometimes, it is are very hard to find mice on a cat condo, so you can also buy them separately and attach them to the cat scratching tree manually with glue.
7. If there are mice hanging of the tree, are they hanging of the side of the cat scratching tree, where if your cat tries to get them, it will fall right off the tree?
8. Is the Cave or Cat Condo ontop of the cat scratching tree, where it is hard to get too, or is it underneath the cat scratching tree where your cat might enjoy hiding in?
Do you think that cats like to be high up in a cave like a bird or down on the ground like a rabbit? After all, cats used to climb trees (and still do if outside) so why would they be scared of heights? What do you think?

What Size Cat Scratching Tree is Right For an Indoor Cat?
Read what Sizes Cat Scratching trees are Good for your Cats Age!
This all depends on your cats size, your cats climbing abilities and your cats age.
For older, lazier cats, a cat scratching tree with more room, more ledges for them to hang of and sleep on and more places to scratch is more recommended then a high steep and wobbly cat scratching tree.
For strong and restless adult cats, one could think of buying high cat scratching condo, with a few caves, lot of scratching space, some hanging toy mice, a hammock perhaps and lots of ledges and entertainment for the cat!
A very important thing to consider when buying a cat scratching tree for kittens, is that most little cats and especially kittens are careless and can easily fall of a tall cat scratching tree with very narrow ledges and get hurt.
Therefore one should think of buying a wider cat scratching tree for kittens that has many ledges and lots of fun cat toys to play with.
For younger cats, it is recommended to have many hanging mice and cat toys on the cat tree, so that the young kittens have plenty of entertainment, as they often get bored and restless.
If you've go a big cat, you might want to get her or him a large cat scratching tree so
that your cat will have plenty of room to climb and scratch and be able to climb around on her tree and exercise herself.
If your cat is a small kitten or small cat, you should buy a small cat scratching tree. Kittens tend to be clumsy and can easily fall off the scratching tree and hurt themselves.
In these cases, a small or low cat scratching tree that is wide is advisable.
In the case of having 2 or more cats, it is advisable to buy a Big Cat Scratching Tree or Cat condo, since this mostly has a cat house, ledges for the cats to sleep on together and lots of room to scratch in comfort!
Some Cat Scratching condos have enough place for 3 or four cats to sit on, somtimes even five.
Then each cat can have his or her own ledge and not have to push each other off!
WARNING: Make sure when buying a kitten or cat scratching tree, that your cat tree doesn't have narrow ledges as the kittens can also fall off this...
